• Everglades Outpost - Next up is the Everglades Outpost, a wildlife rescue home to over 200 exotic animals. In 1991, Bob and Barbara Freer began rescuing and rehabilitating animals that would otherwise face euthanasia. They started with small birds and raccoons, eventually expanding to include camels, lemurs, big cats, and more! Many of these animals were once illegal exotic pets, and the aim is always to return them to their natural habitats.

• Flamingo Visitor Center - Seeking a touch of civilization? You’ll find it at the Flamingo Visitor Center just ahead. This visitor center offers the usual amenities like snacks, restrooms, and an information booth, but also much more. Interested in renting a canoe or kayak? They have them! Need a bicycle? They have those too!

• Gumbo Limbo Trail - Up next is a brief detour to the Gumbo Limbo Trail. This half-mile trail is paved, shaded, and winds through a dense grove of hardwood trees and lush ferns. It’s easy and can be completed in about 15 minutes.

• Anhinga Trail - Coming up is a short detour to the Anhinga Trail, one of the park’s most popular hikes. This mile-long boardwalk loops through a vibrant sawgrass marsh. If you’re eager to spot some wetlands wildlife, this is the trail for you.

• Mahogany Hammock Road - Just ahead is a quick detour to the Mahogany Hammock Trail. This boardwalk trail meanders a half-mile through a dense jungle of hardwood trees and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Beyond the lush greenery, the trail is also home to the largest living mahogany tree in the United States!

• Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center - In the early 1900s, large portions of the Everglades were drained, filled, and converted into agricultural or residential land. Unchecked hunting of local wildlife was rampant. It seemed inevitable that the entire wetland would be erased from existence.

• Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower - Coming up soon is the Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower. Accessible via a short boardwalk, this observation platform offers visitors panoramic views of the “river of grass” that characterizes much of the Everglades. It’s a quick, 5-minute detour, and definitely worth a visit.

• Pinelands Trailhead - Just ahead is the Pineland Trail, where you can experience the most endangered ecosystem in the Everglades. This half-mile, paved loop runs through a forest of lush green pines, palmettos, and wildflowers. It feels like a walk through a primordial rainforest!

• Main Park Road - Earnest F. Coe is often called the Father of the Everglades, but he didn’t create this park alone. He had significant help, especially from Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Douglas, a columnist for the Miami Herald, was known for her passionate advocacy for women’s rights, racial justice, and conservation. She joined Coe’s fight in the 1920s, using her writing skills to defend the Everglades. She penned columns to capture public interest and wrote letters to Congress to make her case.

• Nine Mile Pond Canoe Trail - Up ahead is the Nine Mile Pond Trail. What sets this trail apart is that it’s not on land! This is a canoe trail. Visitors with boats can paddle the 5-mile loop through shallow, grassy marshes, not just observing the natural scenery from afar, but actually moving through it! Water levels are generally high enough in the fall and winter, though conditions can vary during droughts.

• Snake Bight Trail - Next is the Snake Bight Trail. Don’t let the name intimidate you. That’s B-I-G-H-T, not B-I-T-E. A bight is a type of bay, and that’s exactly what you’ll find here. This 3.6-mile out-and-back trail travels through lush, shaded jungle before opening onto a scenic bay. It takes about an hour to walk on average, but it’s also open to bikes, except for the brief boardwalk section at the end.

• Christian Point Trail - Coming up soon is the Christian Point Trail. If you’re looking to escape the crowds, this might be the trail for you, as it’s not one of the park’s more popular ones. It’s slightly more challenging than some other trails, but still ranks as moderate difficulty. The entire trail is four miles round trip and leads to another expansive view of the shoreline accessible from Snake Bight Trail.

• 33034 - Approaching is the West Lake Trail. This half-mile boardwalk leads to West Lake and offers clear views across the water. It takes about 10 minutes to walk and is a great stop for those hoping to see some of the park’s marine wildlife. The water isn’t particularly clear, but see if you can spot the telltale ripples of an alligator or crocodile swimming across the lake! If you were a deer, would you notice it approaching in time to escape?

• Eco Pond Trailhead - Just ahead is the Eco Pond Trail. If you’re eager to see more Everglades wildlife, this is the perfect stop. This half-mile trail loops around a small pond that’s almost always teeming with wading birds, ducks, songbirds, and more. Plus, keep an eye on the waters for softshell turtles and alligators!
