Florence - Meet the multilingual driver at Piazza Adua in Florence, hop into the car, and embark on an amazing full-day private tour! The journey will take you through the places of Leonardo da Vinci’s origins (ever wondered where the most famous genius in history was born?) and to the iconic town of Montecatini Terme, known for its UNESCO World Heritage Thermal Spas. Then, visit the medieval village of Montecatini Alto, accessible by the world’s oldest funicular railway, operating since 1898. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in ancient history and enjoy the breathtaking views from the fortress. Get ready to set off: the first stop is just an hour away!
-
Vinci - The journey dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci begins at Anchiano, the birthplace where he was born on April 15, 1452. The house is nestled among green hills, offering views of the beautiful landscapes often depicted in the artist’s works. Here, you can enter the house where a life-size hologram of the artist shares an exciting tale of his extraordinary life.
Continue to Vinci, a town rich in Leonardo’s legacy. Here, you can independently explore the Museo Leonardiano inside the Castle, showcasing a collection of machines dedicated to Leonardo’s work. The Museum also features the “Leonardo and Painting” exhibition, presenting high-resolution, life-size reproductions of Leonardo’s paintings and some drawings.
Finally, stroll through the village and visit the church of S.Croce, where you can admire the ancient baptismal font where Leonardo was baptized. -
Vinci - It’s time for lunch! We’ll stop at a farm in the countryside of Vinci, surrounded by vineyards. Weather permitting, we can also tour the vineyards! Regardless, enjoy a tasting of four glasses of wine produced on the farm, accompanied by a board of typical Tuscan cold cuts.
-
Terme di Montecatini - After lunch, we’ll travel for about 30 minutes to the iconic town of Montecatini Terme, a favorite of the jet-set, princes, and kings who sought the healing properties of its thermal waters. The Romans were aware of Montecatini’s waters, but it was the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopoldo de’ Medici, who significantly developed the town into an international destination. Our tour includes a brief visit to the thermal baths, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO: Terme Tettuccio. Your tour leader will showcase the stunning Liberty architecture surrounding the Thermal Springs.
-
Parco delle Terme di Montecatini - In five minutes, we’ll reach the Funicolare Station, the best way to access the medieval village of Montecatini Alto.
-
Montecatini Alto - The journey takes ten minutes on the world’s oldest funicular, operating since 1898, which has carried some of history’s most famous figures: starting with Giuseppe Verdi, who was on the inaugural trip on June 4, 1898! Royalty, scientists, philosophers, politicians, rock stars, Hollywood celebrities, and tourists have all taken the funicular to experience a piece of ancient history! During the Middle Ages, when armies battled on the plains below, this fortress was an unbreakable bastion, and you’ll have free time to explore it on your own. Discover the ruins of the first fortress, the Romanesque S.Pietro’s church and its bell tower, the tower of CastelNuovo, the square, the neo-Gothic theater housing a pizzeria, and several medieval houses. Take a break in the picturesque square for an ice cream before being captivated by the valley view! Now, your tour leader awaits: it’s time to return.
