Fes - Begin your adventure with a convenient 7am pickup from your riad or hotel by one of our multilingual drivers. As you travel into the Middle Atlas Mountains, your first stop will be in the charming ski chalet town of Ifrane, often referred to as Swiss Morocco, constructed by the French in the 1930s. The second stop will be the tranquil Berber town of Azrou, where you will continue into the cedar forests to observe the friendly Barbary apes in their natural environment.
Next, you will cross the Atlas Mountains, navigating through rapidly changing landscapes and vegetation, eventually reaching the town of Rissani, known as the gateway to the Sahara. Heading south, you will be captivated by the sight of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, which can reach heights of up to 50 meters and extend eastward towards the Algerian Sahara border. Upon arriving in Merzouga, get ready to enjoy a 90-minute sunset camel trek through the shifting dunes to a traditional Berber desert camp. Here, you will spend an unforgettable night dining, listening to music, sipping tea by the fire, and stargazing.
Merzouga / Khamlia / Rissani
Merzouga - On the second morning of the Fez desert tour, after breakfast at the Auberge, you will visit the black volcanic rocks of marble fossils, meet a nomad family living in a tent, visit Khamlia village known for its black community and their spiritual Gnawa music, and see Lake Dayte Sarji, which forms in springtime and attracts pink flamingos and wildlife. You will then take a break for lunch in Merzouga or Hassi Labied. After lunch, you will explore the canal irrigation system and take a walk in the oasis at the foot of the dunes. Continue to your hotel to relax and prepare for a 90-minute camel trek to enjoy the sunset. While riding your dromedary, you will proceed to the camp for an overnight stay in a traditional nomad tent. Enjoy dinner and spend the night in a bivouac amidst the dunes.
