- Hippodrome - The Hippodrome is often linked with the illustrious era of Constantinople as an imperial capital. However, its origins date back to when the city was known as Byzantium, a town of moderate importance. In AD 203, Emperor Septimius Severus revitalized the city, expanding its walls and constructing a hippodrome for chariot races and other entertainment.
In AD 324, Emperor Constantine the Great chose to reestablish Byzantium as Nova Roma (New Rome) following his triumph at the nearby Battle of Chrysopolis. Despite this, the name did not gain popularity, and the city was soon renamed Constantinople, the City of Constantine. Constantine significantly expanded the city, with one of his major projects being the renovation of the Hippodrome. It is estimated that Constantine’s Hippodrome measured approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) in length and 130 m (427 ft) in width.

This grand underground cistern, constructed by Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I (527-565), is affectionately called “Yerebatan Sarayı” (Sunken Palace) due to its numerous marble columns rising from the water. It is also known as “Bazilika Sarnıcı” (Basilica Cistern) by some, as it was built on the site of the former Stoa Basilica.
With an 80,000-ton water storage capacity, Yerebatan Cistern is the largest covered cistern in the city and features more reclaimed supporting elements than other covered cisterns. Spanning an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, this impressive structure has a rectangular shape with a length of 140 meters and a width of 70 meters. The ticket fee of 40 USD is not included.

Visitors can enjoy an unparalleled shopping experience and a unique atmosphere that captures the spirit of Istanbul. It’s no surprise that the Grand Bazaar is one of Istanbul’s must-see attractions, drawing over half a million visitors daily.
