Eyup Sultan Mosque - Commissioned by Fatih Sultan Mehmet II (Mehmet The Conqueror) five years after he captured Constantinople for the Ottomans in 1453, the mosque fell into disrepair and was further damaged by earthquakes. It was reconstructed in 1800 in a Baroque style using beautiful pale honey-colored stone. The interior is elegantly designed, with a decorated dome measuring 17.5m in diameter, supported by two half-domes. Located near the Golden Horn in the Eyup District of Istanbul, the mosque was built outside the walls of Constantinople after its conquest. According to a hadith in the Qital-e Rome chapter of Sahih Muslim, Prophet Muhammad stated that the first commander and army to conquer Constantinople would enter Paradise. Based on this hadith, Commander Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, who supported Prophet Muhammad after the hijra (migration) to Medina in 622, embarked on his last military campaign to Constantinople.
