- Blue Mosque - Originally named The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, after its builder Sultan Ahmed I, this mosque was constructed in the early 1600s. At that time, mosques were only built by sultans who had achieved military success. Despite lacking notable achievements and against his advisors’ counsel, Sultan Ahmed erected this magnificent structure as his enduring legacy. Today, it is affectionately called the Blue Mosque due to the blue tiles arranged in geometric patterns and floral designs within the mosque.
Note: “The Blue Mosque will be closed for renovation starting January 1st, 2023. Alternatively, visitors can explore another iconic Istanbul mosque: Yeni Cami (the New Mosque).”
- Suleymaniye Mosque - Situated on Istanbul’s Third Hill, the Suleymaniye was the city’s largest mosque for over 450 years until it lost this title in 2019. Beyond its impressive size, this mosque was designed by the esteemed architect Mimar Sinan, a prominent figure in Istanbul’s architectural heritage.
