Pass by the Hagia Sophia, the world’s oldest and fastest-built cathedral, converted into a mosque in 1453 by the Ottomans after conquering Constantinople. • Hippodrome - After visiting Hagia Sophia, stroll through the Blue Mosque area, named for the blue tiles that adorn its interior. Built between 1609 and 1616 during Ahmed’s reign, the mosque is currently closed for renovations. Continue through Sultanahmet Square, stopping at the Obelisk of Theodosius and the Hippodrome of Constantinople, which hosted gladiatorial games, official ceremonies, celebrations, protests, and punishments throughout the Roman (203-330 CE), Byzantine (330-1453 CE), and Ottoman (1453-1922) eras.
• Sinan Pasha Complex - Head towards the square to visit the Sinan Pasha Complex, a notable example of classical period architecture. The complex includes a madrassa (school), a tomb, and a fountain, all constructed from meticulously cut kufaki stone and enclosed by iron-windowed walls. A fountain (sebil) for water distribution is located at the corner of the walls. The center showcases Turkish Islamic culture with various rooms, including a courtyard display answering common questions about Islamic faith, Muslim societies, and culture, a Calligraphy Workshop offering a brief history of calligraphy and its significant masters in Turkish Islamic tradition, and a Hadith classes section, which has been a place of learning for over 400 years.
