Delve into the grandness of this cathedral-sized Cistern, constructed under the rule of Emperor Justinian I in 532 A.D. for fulfilling the water needs of the Great Palace. It has a capacity to accumulate up to 80,000 cubic meters of water, transported through a 20-kilometer long series of aqueducts from a nearby reservoir in the Black Sea.
Embark down the stairway of fift-two stone steps leading into the entrance of the cistern. The cistern is encircled by a firebrick wall of 4 meters thickness, applied with a layer of waterproofing mortar. Collect interesting facts about the water supply to the Basilica Cistern, originating from the Eğrikapı Water Distribution Center situated in the Belgrade Forest, and passing through the Valens Aqueduct and the Mağlova Aqueduct, running 971-meter and 115-meter respectively, both erected by Emperor Justinian.
