- Faros Armenistis - Built in 1891, the Armenistis Lighthouse stands as a silent tribute to Mykonos island’s rich maritime history and remains fully operational today.
Located in the Fanari area on the north-western part of the island, about 6.5 kilometers from Mykonos town along the north coast road, the lighthouse offers a stunning view of the blue waters between Mykonos and the neighboring island of Tinos. Its strategic position provides scenic vistas of the surrounding areas, making it a worthwhile visit to appreciate the island’s captivating history and breathtaking beauty.
The decision to construct the Armenistis Lighthouse followed the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887 off the island’s north coast, which resulted in the loss of eleven lives. To prevent such tragedies, the 19-meter tall lighthouse was erected by 1891, serving as a guiding beacon for incoming ships.
- Agios Sostis - Agios Sostis is one of the quietest beaches in Mykonos, located away from the bustling southern beaches. This unspoiled area lacks amenities, offering visitors a sense of complete freedom. The sandy beach stretches for about 250 meters and is favored by nudists due to its secluded location. If you enjoy skinny-dipping, this is the perfect spot for you!
- Ftelia Beach - Ftelia is a beautiful, north-facing beach in Mykonos, popular among windsurfers due to the Meltemi wind from the north. The sandy shore and turquoise sea create a peaceful and uncrowded environment, despite its accessibility from Chora. A beach bar at the edge provides seating under umbrellas.
The beach is also known for its nearby neolithic settlement, believed to be the burial site of Ajax the Lesser, a hero from Homer’s Iliad. Ftelia is not accessible by bus, so private transportation is necessary to visit this secluded beach.
- Fokos Beach - Located in a rocky bay in the northern part of the island, Fokos Beach is one of Mykonos’ hidden gems, free from crowds. A taverna faces the beach, which is usually nearly deserted except for a few sunbathers. It is a popular spot for horseback riding, so don’t be surprised to see horses on the road to the beach.
Fokos offers a tranquil, undeveloped beach experience, feeling remote despite its proximity to Mykonos Town. Accessible only by private means after a turn in Ano Mera, it is located just past the artificial lake of Marathi, which supplies fresh water to the island.
- Merchia Beach - Situated in the northeast part of Mykonos, 8 km from Ano Mera Village, Merchia Beach is ideal for those seeking an alternative side of the island. The small, sandy beach with clear blue waters is surrounded by little vegetation and a few picturesque houses, mainly belonging to fishermen. There are no umbrellas or sunbeds, but salt cedars provide shade. Visitors should bring their own water and food as there are no nearby amenities. Access to Merchia is via a dirt road, but the journey is worth it.
Nearby, the small chapel of Saint Nicholas is built on the rocks by the sea.
- Monastery of Panayia Tourliani - Located 8 km from Mykonos town in Ano Mera village, the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani was established in 1542 by two priests and named after the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Restored in 1767, the monastery was renamed after an icon of the Virgin Mary found in the nearby area of Tourlos. Panagia Tourliani is now the island’s patron and celebrates on August 15th. The building features impressive architecture with a whitewashed exterior and a colored dome, and a beautiful marble fountain in the yard. Inside, there is an ornate wooden iconostasis made in 1775 by Florentine artists, depicting icons of apostles, saints, and New Testament scenes.
The monastery also houses a small ecclesiastical museum with wood carvings, embroideries, vestments, holy icons, and the monastery’s first bells.
- Ano Mera - Ano Mera is the second largest village in Mykonos after Chora (the main town) and is one of the island’s oldest villages. It offers a few hotels and rental accommodations. This quiet village allows locals to continue their daily lives without the interruption of tourist crowds, unlike the capital.
Ano Mera features several taverns around its main square, where visitors can enjoy traditional dishes at reasonable prices. Cafes and pastry shops also line the square.
