This tour of northern Cyprus takes you on a journey through various historical eras – from ancient times to the medieval period and the 1970s. Highlights include the classical city ruins of Salamis, the historic town of Famagusta, and the intriguing ‘ghost town’ of Varosha.
The adventure begins in Salamis, where visitors can wander through ancient streets and explore the remnants of temples that once bustled with activity in this vibrant city. The partially restored amphitheater is a highlight, offering a window into the past when it hosted performances and festivals. The next stop is the 5th-century Monastery of St Barnabas, featuring an icon museum with pieces from the Byzantine era.
Following this, a brief guided tour of the eerie former seaside town of Varosha reveals a place where time has seemingly paused for decades. After some free time for lunch, the tour continues in Famagusta, a city that was once among the wealthiest in the Mediterranean. Here, visitors will see the Venetian castle and the Gothic cathedral that has been converted into a mosque.
