Valley of the Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan) - By 4×4 safari car, you will visit The Valley of the Whales (known in Arabic as Wadi Al-Hitan), a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Egypt’s Western Desert, about 150 km southwest of Cairo and near the Fayoum Oasis. It is one of the most important fossil sites globally for understanding whale evolution.
Significance: Contains fossil remains of the earliest, now extinct, suborder of whales – the Archaeoceti. These fossils demonstrate the transition of whales from land-based to marine life.
What to See:
Fossil skeletons of Basilosaurus and Dorudon (ancient whale species)
Fossils of prehistoric sea creatures, such as sharks and rays
A small museum (Wadi Al-Hitan Fossil and Climate Change Museum) with exhibits about whale evolution and the ancient environment
Natural desert landscapes, sand dunes, and rare plant and animal life - Magic Lake Camp - Why It’s Called the “Magic Lake”
The lake’s name originates from its extraordinary ability to change colors multiple times a day. This phenomenon is due to varying sunlight angles, mineral content, and seasonal factors, creating a captivating spectacle that enhances its mystical charm.
- Wadi El-Rayan - The Waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan are Egypt’s only natural waterfalls, located within the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area in the Fayoum Governorate, about 150 km southwest of Cairo.
Key Facts:
Formation: The waterfalls are man-made in origin but naturally formed over time as a result of connecting two lakes (Upper and Lower Wadi El Rayan Lakes) to manage excess agricultural drainage water from the Fayoum Depression.
Height: The waterfalls are not tall but create a beautiful cascade effect, especially during high water flow seasons.
Environment: Surrounded by desert dunes, cliffs, and limestone formations, the waterfalls offer a rare blend of water and desert landscapes.
- Qarun Lake - Qarun Lake, one of the oldest natural lakes in the world.
- Jabal El Medawara - Medawara Mountain, also known as Jabal El Medawara, is a striking rock formation situated within the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area in Egypt’s Faiyum Governorate. This natural landmark offers panoramic views of the surrounding desert and lakes, making it a favored spot for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
