Additional Information

Join an Archaeologist on a journey through the historic Roman city of Herculaneum, obliterated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Herculaneum was a preferred vacation spot for the Roman elite, described by Romans as a compact wonder-box. Its private homes and public structures displayed marble adornments, wall art, mosaic floorings, along with items used in daily life. Often referred to as ‘Pompeii’s sister’, this city boasts some well-preserved findings like wooden doors and refined paintings.

With an Archaeologist guiding you and providing insightful anecdotes, you’ll feel as though you’re strolling through a city frozen in time!

Great archeological tour with the best guide, Luciano! - Our Herculaneum tour was one of the best parts of our trip, thanks to our amazing and knowledgeable tour guide, Dr. Luciano Leone. We love historical tours and he's the best guide we've ever had. Luciano made the tour educational, exciting, and fun - we felt like we went back into history. We'd highly recommend Luciano for anyone visiting Herculaneum or Pompeii -- he was the highlight of our tour and we left with a deeper appreciation of the place and history. Thank you for a wonderful time!

Luciano Leone, fantastic guide - Luciano Leone delivered the best guided tour I have ever experienced. With his energy and enthusiasm, he literally captivated our group of international friends. The connections he made between past history and nowadays were very clear and easy to understand.

Great tour, relaxed and really informative - We received the contact details for our guide as planned, which was good, as due to a train delay we were late arriving. The guide was very understanding and waited. The tour itself was just what I wanted. We got a good insight into Herculaneum, its origins and some of the more important areas. All the time the information was at a really good level, detailed but maintained our interest! Giulia’s expertise was apparent and her English was excellent. I would definitely recommend.

Great guided tour of Herculaneum - Herculaneum is a fascinating place to visit and was made even better with Anna our hugely knowledgable and engaging guide. Anna being an experienced Archaeologist brought the ruins to life and explained the tragedy following the eruption of Vesuvius. We were glad we visited Herculaneum as well as Pompeii, it is much smaller but with some unique features and it feels a more intimate experience.

Great tour with a passionate archaeologist guide! - We had a wonderful private tour of Herculaneum with tour guide Sara. She is an archaeologist with a deep knowledge of both Herculaneum and Pompeii and a clear love and passion for these awesome ruins. She was full of interesting facts and pointed out lots of things that we would easily have missed. We would highly recommend her!

Private tour with an archaeologist is worth the price. - This was the trip of a lifetime for me and a special experience for my adult grandson. We both have read quite a bit about Herculaneum, Pompeii, and the Roman Empire, and it was thrilling to see Herculaneum for ourselves. Our guide was both gracious and informative. At the end of our tour we were allowed to wander a bit by ourselves and to visit the two nearby museums.

City is buried under volcanic ash - Herculaneum was buried by volcanic ash spewed by Mt Vesuvius during its eruption during the Roman Empire. The city is buried under 16 meters (52 feet) of ash. Herculaneum is not as well-known as nearby Pompeii, but it is worth exploring the site that is revealed by archaeologists. Herculaneum was popular in ancient times for its location by the coast and its mild and sunny weather. It's not far from Naples; Mt Vesuvius is full of foreboding. This site in southwestern Italy is a favorite destination for visitors.
