Highlights
  • Parco Acheologico di Ercolano - Join us in exploring the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most well-preserved ancient cities globally. Buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Herculaneum offers a remarkable glimpse into the past. Unlike the more extensive Pompeii, Herculaneum retains much of its urban and civic layout. You can still see houses, doors, bedrooms, workshops, and various objects in their original state. Walking through the paved streets with your guide will be an unparalleled experience, immersing you in the daily life of ancient Herculaneum. You’ll enter homes where the vibrant frescoes remain intact, visit the gymnasium and baths where people once gathered to discuss everything from politics to business, and feel as if you can sense the ancient city’s smells, sounds, and colors! Please note that wheelchair use must be reported 24 hours before your visit.

  • Parco Acheologico di Ercolano - The ancient beach: the only waterfront of a nearly entirely preserved Roman city.

  • La Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo - The Terrace of Marco Nonio Balbo: Herculaneum honored its most esteemed citizen and patron, Marcus Nonius Balbo, with a terrace that once overlooked the sea.

  • Casa dei Cervi - House of Deer: This is the most luxurious and refined residence discovered in the excavation area, named after two marble sculptures depicting deer being attacked by dogs.

  • Partem Domus lignea - Casa del Tramezzo di Legno - The House of the Wooden Partition: Named for the folding wooden structure found here, designed to separate the splendid atrium from the homeowner’s study, or tablinum.

  • Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite - House of Neptune and Amphitrite: This house belonged to a wealthy merchant and features a stunning mosaic of Neptune and his companion Amphitrite.

  • Casa Sannitica - The Samnite House: One of the most renowned archaeological remains in Herculaneum, considered one of the oldest dwellings on the site.

  • Ercolano - The decumanus maximus is the main street in Roman cities, including Herculaneum, and was lined with the most prestigious houses.

  • College of the Augustales - The Sacellum of the Augustals: A Roman-era building used for emperor worship rites, maintained by Augustal priests.

  • Casa d’Argo - Casa D’argo: Named after a now-lost fresco that once decorated the peristyle, depicting Argo Panoptes, the giant with a hundred eyes.

  • Salone della Barca di Ercolano - Boat Pavilion: This unique exhibition site houses a charred boat discovered along Herculaneum’s beach during excavations in 1981.

  • Parco Acheologico di Ercolano - End of the tour

A must do when visiting Herculaneum! - An absolute must do when visiting Herculaneum ruins. We had Arcangelo as our guide and he was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. It was very easy to find him and without the information he gave us, we wouldn't have a clue what we would have been looking at. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Incredibly Well Preserved - Herculaneum’s buildings and artifacts are incredibly well preserved. Being a “resort” town much smaller in scale than Pompeii, it is also a manageable visit that does not require hours of walking to see fascinating points of interest. We took the high speed train from Rome for the day and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Finally, our guide Riccardo was extremely knowledgeable (being an archaeologist) and was passionate about sharing his insights with us.
