- Archaeological Site and Museum of Eleusis - The “Eleusiio” refers to the archaeological site and museum in Eleusis, renowned for its ancient amphorae and significant excavation discoveries. Situated on the southern slope of the Asklepieion hill, this site is where Eumolpus established the mysteries of Demeter and Kore, with their sanctuaries unearthed to the west and east, respectively. The extensive archaeological site on this hill includes the sanctuary’s remains and the ancient theater. It is named after an ancient Greek poet who composed hexameter verses about Demeter and Persephone and is believed to be buried here.
- Kanellopoulou 1 - The Old Olive Oil factory of Elefsina was established by the Lysandros and Emmanouil Charilaos brothers, who arrived in Elefsina from Galatsi, Romania, in 1867. This family business, still operated by the same family, is renowned for producing extra virgin olive oil and other oils like sesame, sunflower, and peanut oils.
- The Ploutonion - The entrance to Hades, located in the Greek city of Ploutonion near Sparta, is a remarkable structure designed in the Doric temple style. It features two entrances: one accessible to visitors and another propped open with a skull. The Greeks believed that closing it would lead to Ploutonion’s destruction by demons. Today, a large rock blocks this entrance.
- Apollonos Dafniforou 24 - Demeter, a goddess in Greek mythology, is the daughter of the Titans Rhea and Cronus, with her Roman counterpart known as Ceres. She is the goddess of agriculture, grain crops, and fertility, with her main temple located on the island of Eleusis near Athens. Demeter was also revered as a protector of children, aligning her with the Roman goddess of children, Bona Dea.
- The Kallichoron Well - The Well of Demeter, a mysterious deep well in the western part of the ancient Greek site Eleusis near Athens, is linked to the origins of many traditions.
There are no reliable records detailing the well’s origins, but it is believed that an Arcadian peasant discovered water at a depth of about 70 meters in or near Eleusis in the 5th century BC. This discovery led to the establishment of a mystery cult known as “the Mysteries of Demeter and Persephone.” It remains uncertain whether this discovery was accidental or intentionally orchestrated. The well became significant as the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries, founded around 535 BC.
- Holy Church of Panagitsa Mesosporitissa - Located at the top of the Archaeological site of Elefsina, above the area where the Eleusinian Mysteries occurred, this beautiful church operates annually on the day of the Entrance, celebrating the midpoint of sowing and the earth’s bountiful harvest.
The church offers a stunning view of the entire city, the bay of Elefsina, and Salamina opposite. Visitors can access it with a ticket to the archaeological site and the Museum, which is included.

During this journey, you’ll gain insights into the spiritual and cultural significance of Eleusis, a historical site featuring well-preserved vestiges of notable Greek architectural works, including the famed Demeter shrine. You’ll also see a quaint chapel and ruins of olden residences.
Known as the cradle of Western civilization, Eleusis served as a spiritual and knowledge hub. This locale was historically the most sacred area for the Eleusinian Mysteries, a religious practice involving confidential rituals honoring Demeter and Persephone, goddesses linked to harvest and maternal affection.
Eleusis is also renowned for its Eleusinian Walls, a chain of defenses that were set up around Athens circa 180 BC with the aim of safeguarding Eleusis against Spartan assailants.
After Eleusis, you’ll tour the adjacent archaeological museum before returning to Athens.
