Blackness Castle - Blackness Castle, located on the south shore of the Firth of Forth in Scotland, is a historic fortress known for its unique ship-like shape and extensive history. Built in the 15th century, around 1440, by Sir George Crichton, the Admiral of Scotland. The long central tower is the “stem,” while the round towers at either end are the “stern” and “bow. It was used as a royal castle by James II and later came into the possession of the Crown. Military Use: Over the centuries, Blackness Castle served various roles including a royal residence, a garrison fortress, a state prison, and an ammunition depot. In outlander it stood in for Fort William and was where Jamie received lashes from Randall. His dad passed away here.

Doune Castle - The castle was built in the late 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and serves as a fine example of a medieval stronghold. Castle Leoch: In the “Outlander” series, Doune Castle represents Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan MacKenzie. It appears prominently in Season 1 as the home of Colum MacKenzie and his clan.

Linlithgow Palace - The birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1542. It was used by various Scottish kings and queens as a comfortable retreat on the way between Edinburgh and Stirling. Decline: The palce fell into decline after a fire in 1746 and was subsequently abandoned. Despite its ruined state, it still showcases the grandeur of its royal. Wentworth Prison: In the “Outlander” series, Linlithgow Palace stands in for the infamous Wentworth Prison, where Jamie Fraser is held and tortured in Season 1. The palace’s dark, atmospheric interiors provided an ideal backdrop for these intense scenes. Filming Location: The palace’s historical ambiance and architectural features made it a perfect choice for the show’s producers to depict the grim setting of Wentworth Prison.

Culross - Culross is located on the north shore of the Firth of Forth in Fife, Scotland. Established in the 6th century, Culross is known for its well-preserved 16th and 17th-century buildings, cobbled streets, and historical sites. In the “Outlander” series, Culross stands in for the fictional village of Cranesmuir. Mercat Cross: The village’s historic town square is featured in scenes, including the memorable moment where Geillis Duncan faces a witch trial. Culross Palace Gardens: These gardens are used to depict the herb garden at Castle Leoch, where Claire picks medicinal herbs and has significant conversations with Geillis Duncan. The series has used many locations around Scotland some of which are on the West Coast including Glasgow Cathedral and the stunning Devils Pulpit where Dougal makes Clare drink from The Liars Spring.
