Fun and education combined - Alastair made this tour absorbing and entertaining with plenty of laughs as well as scary moments. I am a resident of Edinburgh and I highly recommend the City of the Dead Tour to discover some of hidden parts of the city and to learn about its grisly past.

Fantastic history and storytelling experience - I had done this tour many years ago, but with Greyfriar's and the Vaults being my favourite part of Edinburgh history, and being a spook nerd, I couldn't wait to repeat the experience. Our tour guide, Ben, was absolutely brilliant. Charming, considerate and helpful, and interested in everyone attending. There was an issue with a ticket of one of the guests, and he took care of it in a friendly and professional manner. Ben took us into the Southbridge Vaults and shared its history and legends. He is such a brilliant and entertaining storyteller who really brings the history and architecture to life, managing a balance of scary and funny. The vaults were incredible, dark, dingy, claustrophobic in places, it was easy to imagine how life unfolded in this dark realm. Ben shared ghost stories and his own experiences with the supernatural, which made your flesh creep, but he also had such a great way of putting you at ease. At one point a visitor felt unwell and he made sure to escort him outside safely. I'm not sure what to believe about ghosts, but the place was so eerie you could easily imagine something creeping about. After the vaults, we went to Greyfriar's Kirkyard, which was extra special because we had a bright moon and dramatic clouds creating scary shadows. The history shared was fascinating, especially the story of the poltergeist and the covenanters. We had special permission to enter the covenanters' prison, which is usually kept locked at all times, and step inside the Black Mausoleum. The guests were made up of believers and sceptics, and Ben left it to us to make up our own minds. At no point did it feel tacky or cheap - it was a genuinely fascinating 2 hours and a glimpse into the strange history of Edinburgh that massively enriched my stay. It's absolutely worth every penny, and get Ben if you can. He gave us time to take pictures and look around and happily answered questions. And you guys gotta check out the gift shop by the kirk yard entrance - it's heaven for a fan of all things creepy, it's even got a haunted doll! I bought some souvenirs, too, which were reasonably priced. Can only recommend!
