• Royal Mile - The tour begins at the Royal Mile, where the history and topography of the city will be introduced. Participants will explore the ‘closes’, intriguing dark alleyways.
• Mercat Cross - Following the exploration of the closes, the tour will pause at the Mercat Cross. A charming unicorn adorns its top. The significance of the unicorn to Scotland and insights into Scottish folklore will be shared.
• St Giles’ Cathedral - Adjacent to the Mercat Cross is St. Giles Cathedral. Discover the purpose of gargoyles and see how many can be spotted above the entrance.
• Heart of Midlothian - Near St. Giles Cathedral, search for the stone heart. Here’s a clue: look down! The heart’s meaning and history will be discussed.
• Writers’ Museum - A short stroll from St. Giles Cathedral along the Royal Mile leads to Makar’s Court and the Writer’s Museum. Can you identify Scotland’s most renowned writers?
• Edinburgh Castle Esplanade - From the Writers’ Museum, the tour proceeds to the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, one of the city’s oldest structures. Stories of royalty, battles, and sieges await.
• Grassmarket - The journey continues from the castle esplanade to the Grassmarket, a spacious plaza known for its pubs. Once a grassy area, can you guess its historical significance? Prepare for surprises!
• Victoria Street - Just around the corner from the Grassmarket lies Victoria Street, one of Edinburgh’s most picturesque and vibrant streets. Time will be taken to admire and photograph the scenery.
• Greyfriars Kirkyard - A brief walk from Victoria Street through Candlemaker Row leads to one of the city’s spookiest sites: the historic graveyard. Tales of bodysnatchers, ghosts, and more will be recounted. From the graveyard gates, one can also view George Heriot’s School, nearly 400 years old.
• Greyfriars Bobby - Just outside the graveyard stands the statue of Edinburgh’s most faithful dog: Bobby!
