- Archerfield Walled Garden - Nestled in the picturesque East Lothian countryside, Archerfield Walled Garden is a distinctive destination. Located near the coastal towns of Gullane and North Berwick, and just 20 miles from Edinburgh’s center, it’s an ideal spot for a refreshing break. The garden boasts meticulously maintained grounds, a Garden Café, a Shop, and a Food Market, offering plenty to explore. Families will enjoy the woodland Fairy Trail and the secure play area. Whether you’re a garden lover seeking inspiration or a food enthusiast in search of a delightful brunch, this place has something for everyone.
- Dirleton Castle - Our journey begins with a visit to the well-preserved Dirleton Castle. Situated in the fertile lands of the Dirleton barony, the castle guards the coastal route to Edinburgh from England, via North Berwick’s port. Visitors can wander through the stunning gardens and gain insights into medieval life and architecture.
- North Berwick - This charming seaside town, a former royal burgh, is located on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, about 20 miles (32 km) east-northeast of Edinburgh. In the nineteenth century, North Berwick became a popular holiday destination due to its two sandy bays, East (or Milsey) Bay and West Bay, and it continues to draw visitors. Enjoy strolling through the streets, walking along East Bay’s beach, or visiting the Scottish Seabird Centre to learn about local wildlife.
- Tantallon Castle - Tantallon Castle, a mid-14th-century fortress, lies 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) east of North Berwick. Perched on a promontory opposite Bass Rock, it overlooks the Firth of Forth. As the last medieval curtain wall castle built in Scotland, Tantallon features a single wall blocking the headland, with the other three sides naturally protected by sea cliffs. The views from the castle across the Firth of Forth are truly breathtaking.
- Athelstaneford - Our final stop is the quaint village of Athelstaneford, renowned for its connection to the Scottish flag. According to popular legend, the original Scottish saltire - a white diagonal cross on a sky blue background - was first adopted here. A visit to the National Flag Heritage Centre offers further insight.
