It is situated in the eastern Andes mountain range and is surrounded by other peaks such as Sincholagua, Pasochoa, and Rumiñahui, all part of the avenue of volcanoes. With its beautifully symmetrical shape, it is an exemplary stratovolcano, known in Quichua as “the neck of the moon.”
Located 50 kilometers from Quito, within the National Park of the same name, it boasts perpetual snow starting at 5,000 meters above sea level.
Quilotoa Lake
Laguna Quilotoa - Situated in the countryside of Latacunga city, in Cotopaxi province, lies the crystal green Quilotoa Lagoon with its distinctive ring shape. Departing from the Panamericana Highway, the road winds initially to reach the Paramo Andino. Along the way, beautiful patchworks of potatoes, onions, barley, and other crops appear, along with sheep, llamas, and alpacas grazing peacefully.
On the journey to the lagoon, various villages and small towns inhabited by Kichua people offer ancient art paintings by Julio Toaquiza and his contemporaries; in Tigua, wooden masks are also available. In Zumbahua, a vibrant market takes place every Saturday, where vendors from the mountains gather in the main plaza. Guinea pigs, groceries, local products, and fruits from the coastal region are readily available.
Baños de Agua Santa
Baños - Baños enjoys a warm, subtropical climate and is located on a small plateau in the Ecuadorian Andes. At an altitude of 1,820 meters (5,971 ft.) above sea level, it is surrounded by lush green mountains and waterfalls. The town is named after its thermal baths. Baños offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as cycling, canyoning, zip-lining, rafting, hiking, bungee jumping, and horse riding, making it one of the most popular destinations in Ecuador.
Despite the unpredictable nature of the Mama Tungurahua volcano looming above the town, its unpredictability attracts visitors who gather at high vantage points on clear nights to watch it spew lava and rocks into the sky like fireworks.
