Highlights
  • Zhinvali Reservoir - The Zhinvali (Jinvali) water reservoir, also referred to as a lake, is situated along the Georgian Military Highway. The dam was constructed by the Soviets in the 1980s to meet the growing water supply needs of Tbilisi. The government identified the Aragvi Gorge, rich in glacier water, as the ideal location.
  • Ananuri Fortified Castle Ensemble - Ananuri Castle is one of Georgia’s most beautiful sites, boasting stunning nature and a fascinating history. It holds a significant place among Georgian architectural landmarks. Since 2007, Ananuri Castle has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in the Aragvi Valley near the Zhinvali Reservoir on the Georgian Military Highway, the castle was built between 1660 and 1676 by the Dukes of Aragvi. It served as their residence and has witnessed numerous battles, with visible traces of wars. The fortress comprises upper and lower castles; the upper castle is better preserved, while the lower castle is mostly in ruins. The oldest structure is the Khevsuruli Tower, situated within the upper castle. This four-story, tall, and narrow tower is typical of those built in Georgia’s high mountain regions.
  • Gudauri - Gudauri is a modern ski resort in Georgia, ideal for extreme sports enthusiasts. Located on the main range of the Caucasus along the Georgian Military Highway, it enjoys stable snow cover from November to May, with an average snow depth of 1.5 meters. Despite its elevation of 2000 meters above sea level, Gudauri experiences warm and sunny weather. The resort is also attractive in summer, offering various tourism activities such as hiking in the Truso and Khada Valleys, horse riding, and rafting on the Aragvi River.
  • Russian Georgian Friendship Monument - The Friendship Monument is located on the Military Highway en route to Kazbegi. Built in the 1980s, the monument is somewhat worn, but the views from its balconies are unparalleled. The Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, also known as the Treaty of Georgievsk Monument, was constructed in 1983 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk and the ongoing friendship between Georgia and Soviet Russia. Situated between the ski resort town of Gudauri and the Jvari Pass, the monument is a large circular stone and concrete structure overlooking the Devil’s Valley in the Caucasus Mountains. Inside, a large tile mural spans the entire circumference, depicting scenes from Georgian and Russian history.
  • Stepantsminda - Stepantsminda, formerly known as Kazbegi, is a village in northern Georgia renowned for its trekking opportunities in the visually stunning surrounding mountains. It offers breathtaking views of Mount Kazbek and the Holy Trinity Church, which is beautifully framed against the mountain. Known for its scenic location in the Greater Caucasus Mountains, Stepantsminda is a hub for trekkers and mountain climbers.
  • Gergeti Trinity Church - Gergeti Trinity Church is located on the right bank of the Chkheri River (a left tributary of the Terek River) at an elevation of 2170 meters, beneath Mount Kazbegi. The church is a popular stop for trekkers and can be reached by a steep three-hour climb or a 30-minute jeep ride up a rough mountain trail. Built in the 14th century, it is the only cross-cupola church in the Khevi province. The separate bell tower dates from the same period. Its isolated location atop a steep mountain, surrounded by vast nature, has made it a symbol of Georgia. In the 18th century, Georgian author Vakhushti Batonishvili wrote that precious relics from Mtskheta, including Saint Nino’s Cross, were brought here for safekeeping during times of danger. Although religious services were banned during the Soviet era, the church remained a popular tourist destination.
