Magical observation of blue penguins coming to shore - From start to finish, this tour is excellent. Despite the rainy cold weather, we were able to see lots of different birds and then an evening spectacle of blue penguins coming out of the ocean, up the beach, and into their burrows. Our primary tour guide and van driver was Shawn who is wonderful. She is quite knowledgeable as well as personable and professional. Leon gave a great talk inside the Royal Albatross Centre, and Shawn guided us outside to see the penguins. The tour is sponsored by a Trust, and the focus is where it should be: on protecting the wildlife and land. Don’t miss this tour.

Loved this tour, even apart from loveable penguins! - Amazing tour. Loved taking the scenic route out on the Otago Peninsula. We stopped several times to enjoy the views, and the silence was so nourishing. Tour guide James shared several (but not too many) interesting stories about the area. Then we arrived at the royal albatross center and geared up for blue penguins, which were SO CUTE. Winter is a great time to go as the platform is not very crowded. We saw 25 penguins altogether. It was quite chilly out there but they have hot drinks available. I suggest taking a couple hand warmers -- they helped me a lot. THANK YOU, PUKEKURA TRUST!

A must do if you enjoy wildlife - We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Danni our tour guide. She was energetic and enthusiastic and passionate about wildlife. The tour was very interesting. We stopped at various places on the way that were of interest and she spotted many birds and landmarks for us along the way. These are things we would have missed if we just drove out to the albatross centre/pukekura penguins ourselves. The highlight was the adorable little blue penguins! This is certainly an experience not be to be missed especially if you enjoy wildlife.

Amazing experience - Fabulous scenery and information. James the guide was such a lovely person and gave great info and took us on a tour of the peninsulla before arriving to see the penquins. An amazing experience. My sole reason for travelling to this part of New Zealand. And i certainly wasnt disappointed. So well managed with the welfare of the penquins first priority as it should be

Otago Peninsula & Blue Penguins - This was a fantastic tour and very informative around the Otago Peninsula. We were able to stop along the way and take in the scenery and wildlife. The Blue Penguin part of the tour was the highlight and also very informative. It was great to be able to view these little creatures come to shore from their hunt in the ocean for food.

Absolutely wonderful experience! - A fantastic tour with our driver/guide Jonathan. It was a small group tour with a ten seater bus. It began with a really good run down on the history of Dunedin followed by our drive out to the Otago peninsula. Along the drive, we learned more about the history, geography and birds of the region with several stops to view some of the local birds of Otago. The running commentary from Jonathan was quite factual, but presented in a story fashion which made it very entertaining. Our final stop was at the Royal Albatross Centre where the Blue Penguin viewing was to begin at dusk. Prior to this we were able to view an Albatross circling overhead, sea lions and fur seals although all at a distance that made photography difficult without a good telephoto lens. The penguins were fabulous with a total of 39 arriving on shore. You get really good views of the penguins from a viewing platform, but they are often only metres away. Attached are some photos taken with my iPhone (5xzoom). Video results were even better. Reasons to choose this tour? 1. You learn a lot from the guide. 2. You see a lot of birds, especially the Blue Penguins. 3. You are supporting the Pukekura Trust, a charitable organization supporting the conservation of this area. Highly recommended!

Very good with a single prolonged moment of irritation. - We enjoyed the tour very much. The bird life was interesting. Jonathan explained everything well but never overdid the talking, as some tour guides tend to do. He was plainly knowledgeable and with it had a good sense of humour. The viewing of albatrosses was wonderful, but it seems we were lucky. The penguin viewing was also good, but the style of the preceding lecture was extremely irritating. We understood the need to be engaging, especially to children, but the woman presenting the lecture came across like a blend of a Sunday school teacher and a huckster at a trade fair. I realise that she probably put much thought into her presentation, but suggest she dial it back to something more soberly scientific. The topic is interesting enough not to need artificial support.
