The story begins in 1599 when Sir William Temple, a distinguished teacher and philosopher, joined the service of the Lord Deputy of Ireland. By 1609, Temple had become the Provost of Trinity College, Dublin, and Master of Chancery in Ireland, prompting his relocation to the country.

Sir William Temple established his residence and gardens on newly reclaimed land at the intersection of Temple Lane and the street now known as Temple Bar.

In 1656, his son, Sir John Temple, acquired more land. The construction of a new sea wall enabled further reclamation, facilitating the development of the area now recognized as Temple Bar. In the 17th century, “Barr” (later shortened to Bar) referred to a raised estuary sandbank often used for walking.

Thus, the embankment of the River Liffey alongside Temple’s Barr, or simply Temple Bar, was formed.

This area eventually evolved into the thoroughfare that connects Westmoreland Street to Fishamble Street.
