Highlights
  • Dresden - Dresden has a long history dating back to the Neolithic era with the Linear Pottery culture tribes around 7500 BC. It was colonized in the mid-13th century by Margrave Dietrich of Meissen due to the eastward expansion of Germans. After a devastating fire in 1491, the city was rebuilt and fortified, and in 1539, Dresden embraced the Protestant Reformation. During the late 17th and 18th centuries, the city was modernized in Baroque and Rococo styles by electors Augustus I and Augustus II.

Before World War II, Dresden was known as “Florence on the Elbe” and was considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities due to its art treasures and architecture. However, by the end of the war, on the night of February 13th-14th, 1945, it was almost completely destroyed by massive bombing raids by Anglo-American forces, resulting in the loss of about 25,000 civilian lives. After the war, and especially following the reunification of West and East Germany in 1990, most of the historical sites were rebuilt.
