- Procession of Princes - Just a short walk from our meeting point, you’ll find the Fürstenzug, or Procession of Princes—an impressive mural that adorns the exterior wall of the former royal stables. Composed of over 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, this expansive artwork showcases a parade of Saxon rulers on horseback, traversing through history. It serves as both an artistic wonder and a historical narrative in ceramic, providing insight into the grandeur and lineage of Saxon leadership. What happened to this wall during the 1945 firestorm? You’ll discover the answer during the tour!
- The Dresden Zwinger - What exactly is a Zwinger? Learn more about this elaborate, baroque space with its elegant design and fascinating origins. If time allows, and if accessible, your guide might reveal a hidden grotto. The Zwinger narrates a tale of power, wealth, and the lasting legacy of its commissioner.
- Royal Palace (Residenzschloss) - Although the Dresden Royal Palace might be smaller than expected, it houses an exceptional collection of treasures and world-class museum rooms. While this visit doesn’t include entry into the museums, you’ll still witness the beautiful palace courtyard with walls adorned with intricate frescoes and the rare Renaissance art technique known as Sgraffito. Ask your guide for insights about the museums within the palace and their highlights to help you decide which ticket to purchase.
- Stallhof - Nestled behind the Residenzschloss, the Stallhof offers a quieter, more intimate view into Dresden’s courtly history. Once a venue for jousting tournaments and royal celebrations, this enclosed Renaissance courtyard still echoes with chivalry and pageantry. The arcaded galleries and sandstone columns create a striking setting where the Medieval Christmas Market is held during Advent. Pass by now without stopping, but return later to enjoy its charming and intimate atmosphere at your leisure.
- Theaterplatz - Welcome to Theaterplatz—one of Dresden’s most impressive and architecturally stunning squares. Surrounded by some of the city’s most significant landmarks, this plaza offers a breathtaking glimpse into Dresden’s cultural and historical core. Dominating the scene is the elegant Semper Opera House, a 19th-century architectural masterpiece and a symbol of the city’s rich musical heritage. Nearby, you’ll find the magnificent Zwinger Palace with its ornate baroque style, and the former royal residence, the Residenzschloss, steeped in Saxon history. Behind you, the Dresden Cathedral rises with quiet grandeur—its spires a solemn counterpoint to the surrounding splendor. Ask your guide to point out the Old Masters Gallery and its entrance while you’re here.
- Frauenkirche Dresden - Gracefully rising above the skyline, the Frauenkirche, also known as the Church of Our Lady, is the unmistakable heart of Dresden. Its elegant dome—rebuilt from ruins after World War II—stands as both an architectural triumph and a powerful symbol of reconciliation. Your guide will share the dramatic story of its destruction, decades-long reconstruction, and the global effort that revived this baroque masterpiece. Whether bathed in sunlight or shadow, the church’s presence is both moving and majestic. Visit it later on your own to quietly absorb the pastel beauty of its interior. You can also explore the old crypts and a small exhibition room detailing the reconstruction.
- Dresden Christmas Market - The Striezelmarkt is Germany’s oldest Christmas market, dating back to 1434! This is where the famous Dresden Stollen originated. We will seek out a baker who offers samples of Stollen, the region’s traditional Christmas cake, and share information about Glühwein (mulled wine) and other Christmas traditions. You’ll learn about other local delicacies and uncover stories behind the world-famous Christmas decorations. We typically conclude the tour here, so feel free to stay and continue sampling the wine, food, and perhaps purchase a Nutcracker to take home!
