Ballenas!!! Humpback whales!!! Real!!! - Whale Watching in Samaná & Cayo Levantado: Nature’s Show at Its Best If there’s one experience in the Dominican Republic that will leave you speechless (and maybe a little misty-eyed), it’s the humpback whale-watching excursion in Samaná Bay. I went with a group of friends, and it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable days of our trip — equal parts awe-inspiring, relaxing, and wildly beautiful. The adventure started in Samaná, where we boarded a boat and headed into the bay, a known hotspot for humpback whales from January to March. It didn’t take long before we spotted them — massive tails flipping gracefully above the waves, powerful bodies breaching the surface with incredible force. It was like watching a live nature documentary, but a thousand times more powerful in person. The crew was amazing — knowledgeable, passionate about conservation, and respectful of the whales' space. They made sure we learned a bit about these majestic creatures while keeping the mood light and fun. Everyone on board was buzzing with excitement every time we caught sight of a spout or a splash. After the whale watching, we headed to Cayo Levantado, also known as Bacardi Island (yes, it’s that postcard-perfect). White sand, turquoise water, and a chilled vibe made it the perfect spot to unwind after the thrill of whale spotting. We grabbed drinks, swam, and just soaked in the sun and views — pure Caribbean bliss. If you're heading to the DR between January and March, do not miss this excursion. It’s the kind of once-in-a-lifetime experience that makes you feel connected to nature in a totally new way — and gives you a story you’ll want to tell over and over.

This excursion took an entire day... -
This excursion took an entire day but it was so worth it. I can admit that by the time the horse back ridign was over, I was ready to go back to my hotel. We took a bus ride for about an hour 1/2 to a boat. The boat ride lasted about 30 minutes. Once we were off of the boat, we took short drive in a safari truck to a ranch. From the ranch we rode a horse and walked about 15 minutes to the waterfall. The waterfall was amazing. Great view! We then had to walk back up to the horses, take the horse back to the ranch, where we enjoyed a dominican buffet. After the buffet we took the safari truck back to the boat. The boat took us to a private beach. The beach was decent. I didn't like the rocks in the water. When the waves hit, the rocks come flying as well. We then got back on the boat and took the boat to the bus. We were picked up from our hotel at 6:15 AM and didn't return back until 8 PM. I was exhausted! Make sure you wear shoes that can get dirty. The trail to the waterfall is muddy.
