- Columbus Park - The town of Discovery Bay is home to Columbus Park. Originally named Puerto Seco (“Dry Harbour”) by Christopher Columbus in 1494 when he and his crew landed on the island, it is said they couldn’t find fresh water to drink. They eventually discovered fresh water about 5 miles west of the town, in a place they named Rio Bueno (“Good River”) due to the quality of the water. In 1947, Puerto Seco was renamed Discovery Bay, as it was the landing site of the Spanish, led by Columbus, on May 4, 1494. The park features several old relics and artifacts on display. There will be a brief stop to take photos and capture the rich history of this historic town.
- Nine Miles - Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, and passed away on May 11, 1981. Visiting this small town is a must for all tourists, including cruise ship and stopover passengers from Ocho Rios, Falmouth, Montego Bay, and even as far as Negril in the west. Nine Miles is a tiny village in the hills of St. Ann where the reggae legend Bob Marley was born and is now laid to rest.
Although Bob Marley moved to Kingston at age 13 to live with his mother and advance his music career, he often returned to Nine Miles to escape the fast-paced life of Kingston. Home is where the heart is, and Bob Marley wrote several of his hit songs while in St. Ann.
Nine Miles, Jamaica, was always his home, and to fully experience Bob Marley’s legacy, you must visit this town. A tour of this settlement will give you a greater understanding of the legend he became; in fact, the community today remains much as it was during Bob Marley’s early days. A Rastafarian tour guide will be available to show you around the property and answer all your questions.
Still present are his first home and the very bed he slept in as a young child and as an adult during his many “cooling out” visits. The rock he used as a pillow, where he would relax, is also there. Many guests have reported feeling Bob Marley’s presence.
The Nine Mile Tour includes his birth and resting place, his favorite activities, and Mount Zion, the spot where he drew inspiration to write his songs. You can also visit the nearby Ethiopian church where his body was laid to rest with his guitar. Please remove your shoes before entering as a sign of respect. Feel free to look around.
