Ancient Amphipolis - In 2014, Amphipolis became the focus of global excavations with the discovery of a massive tomb featuring two stunning Caryatids, generating worldwide excitement. These statues, mirroring each other on either side of a marble doorway, have led to theories that the tomb belongs to a significant female figure from Alexander the Great’s era, such as Olympias, the wife of Philip II and mother of Alexander. Caryatids, sculpted female figures used as pillars in Greek and Roman architecture, stand over seven feet tall at the tomb’s entrance. With one arm outstretched as if guarding the tomb’s entrance, these figures heighten speculation that the tomb could also be the resting place of Roxana, Alexander’s wife.
