- Echo Lake Park - Enjoy a picnic lunch at Echo Lake, a shallow, oligotrophic lake located at 10,600 ft (3,230 m) above sea level near Mount Blue Sky in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. It was formed around 10,000 years ago during the last glaciation period. As glaciers receded in the Chicago Creek valley, lateral moraines created a natural dam, forming the lake.

At the foot of Mount Blue Sky, savor a leisurely picnic lunch at Echo Lake Park, where a glacially formed alpine lake mirrors the surrounding peaks. Surrounded by ancient bristlecone pines, some over 1,700 years old, it’s a serene spot to relax and take photos.
Continue your journey along one of North America’s highest paved roads, ascending to 14,130 feet. Beyond the treeline, the scenery transforms into alpine tundra and granite formations, where mountain goats and bighorn sheep are frequently spotted. At the summit, take in the breathtaking views of the Rockies and the Continental Divide. If weather or road conditions restrict access, the journey will proceed to the highest safely reachable point, with a stop in the historic town of Idaho Springs along the route.
