  • Royal Delft - Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles - From the approximately 32 potteries that were founded in the 17th Century, Royal Delft, established in 1653, is the only remaining Delftware factory left in Delft. It is a national heritage and a must-see when visiting Holland! Here, the renowned Royal Delftware is still entirely hand painted according to centuries-old tradition. In 1919 the company was awarded the prefix ‘Royal’ confi rming its special relationship with the Dutch Royal family. For generations the Dutch Royal family have been true admirers of Royal Delftware.

Nowadays Royal Delft is not only a factory for Delft Blue and a knowledge institute for ceramics, but also a museum. When visiting Royal Delft you discover the complete history and the production process of Delft Blue and Royal Delft in an audiovisual presentation. You witness a painter at work and are introduced to the other two icons of Delft in the themed chambers: the dining room of Johannes Vermeer, the famous 17th century painter from Delft and the Royal Chambers containing the collection of Orange Ceramics that has been produced over the centuries for the Dutch Royal family. In the museum, you can admire the collection of antique and modern pieces of Delft Blue earthenware and in the factory you can witness the authentic production process. Additional Information

400 Years ago the first Dutch East India Company ships arrived back in Holland filled with the Chinese blue and white porcelain. This porcelain became very popular among affluent families such as the European Royals. When the import of Chinese porcelain declined as a result of civil wars in China, the Dutch potteries seized the opportunity and developed their own version of this blue and white porcelain. This resulted in the birth of Delft Blue in the Netherlands. Nowadays, Delft Blue is one of the true Dutch icons.

Great museum! - We visited the museum and also did the painting class in which we made tiles. The museum is fascinating, covers the origins in China, and how the industry grew and then faded away. They even made building products till 1980. Some fantastic displays, including a full size reproduction of Thr Night Watch made from 480 tiles. You can walk thru the factory area, there were several people working on various phases of product including a lady painting a vase For the workshop, they show you how to use brushes to desired effect, then you can create your own design or pick from one of theirs. It's helpful if you have some skill as it's a bit more than paint by number, my wife made a very nice tile, mine was I think serviceable Overall a great experience

What a fantastic tour! - The museum part is fun and sometimes funny with the time machine aspect. The historical collection of delftware is exquisite. And the opportunity to see the artisans at work is just amazing. Highly recommend this tour if you’re able to swing by Delft.

Lovely experience - If you are in Delft, it's worth a visit to this factory and museum. The museum has a good layout and there are signs for all the displays. It's a fascinating look at a craft that crossed over from China and became Dutch. The factory itself is fascinating and there was an artist at the day who was handpainting a plate. The gift shop has unique pieces that would make a good gift. There's alao a small cafe for those who just want to wait Highly recommended.

Must Love Blue!!! - It has been 49 years since I last visited Delft with my parents. I have a small collection of pieces and also the ones my mother bought. This was my first visit to the factory. I enjoyed seeing one of the artists painting a bowl and the various molds. Beautiful displays and I enjoyed the audio tour. Cute cafe with super Dutch apple pie!!!

Very interesting - Really enjoyed this museum. The hand held audio device was perfectly fine for my mum who wears hearing aids. Very interesting collection and I like the ‘extra information’ computer points in each room. Lovely to see a couple of people working in the factory on a Sunday too. You can visit the shop and cafe without an entry ticket.

Very interesting - There’s a video to enjoy pre tour - you get an audio device to listen to as you walk around. After seeing lots of old samples, and the original model show house you then get to look around the factory - all very interesting - the gift shop at the end has some very expensive pieces so be careful what you pick up!

Nice short tour. - This is a well done tour that begins with a short video overview. It continues with displays of some of the beautiful pieces and an overview of the history. You get to see an artist at work painting one of the pieces. It’s about a 20-30 walk to the factory from the old town center.

Worth a visit if you are interested in Delft blue and don't mind the long walk to the museum from the Delft station - My husband was interested in the Delft blue and so we decided to visit Delft and the museum although it was originally not in our plan. Be warned though that it is a long walk (about 20 minutes) from the Delft central station. The museum provided access to an audio tour. It was interesting to learn the history of the Delft blue and its evolution over time, from mainly blue and white porcelain, to the incorporation of colours, to tiles and finally to external materials for buildings. It was also fascinating to find out that the Dutch was influenced, and even inspired, by Chinese pottery.
