Bagamoyo, located approximately 75 kilometres north of Dar es Salaam, was historically an infamous port for trading slaves from the interior regions and later became the initial capital of the German colonial empire. This location holds significant global historical value, due to its role as the gateway for Arab and European missionaries, explorers, and traders into East and Central Africa, and its connection to the notorious slave trade.
Among the tourist highlights are the 12th century Kaole ruins, believed to symbolize one of the earliest interactions between Islam and Africa; the Old Fort constructed in 1860, originally used to detain slaves for transport to Zanzibar; the initial Roman Catholic Church in East Africa, erected around 1868, which once served as a hub for managing a camp of approximately 650 liberated slaves; the German colonial administration head offices, the Boma, stationed in the premier capital of German East Africa; the Mission Museum that showcases the history of Bagamoyo; and the Livingstone Memorial Church, to name a few.
