- Golden Temple of Dambulla - Situated within Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Dambulla is renowned for its five caves carved from living rock, adorned with sculptures and murals. These caves are a significant cultural heritage site. The presence of Pre-Brahmi inscriptions from the third century BC and murals from the eighteenth century highlight a long history of human activity. In 1991, UNESCO recognized this site as a World Heritage Site. From 1982 to 1998, the Dambulla Project, under the Central Cultural Fund, undertook the conservation of these murals.
The Dambulla Project serves as the sole research center for murals and the headquarters for mural conservation in Sri Lanka. It also houses the country’s only mural museum and is responsible for preserving murals in nearby temples. This project is based at the Dambulla Cave Temple.

Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Known as Sinhagiri or Sigiriya, this ancient rock fortress is located in the northern Matale District of Sri Lanka, near Dambulla in the Central Province. It holds significant historical and archaeological value, featuring a massive rock column that stands 180 meters (590 feet) tall.
According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Culavamsa, the area was originally a forest. Following storms and landslides, it transformed into a hill. King Kashyapa (477–495 AD) chose this location as his capital, using the rock as the foundation for his palace. He adorned the palace sides with vibrant frescoes and constructed a gateway resembling a giant lion on a small plateau halfway up the rock. This lion-shaped structure inspired the name Sinhagiri (the Lion Rock), which shares an etymological connection with Sinhapura (the Sanskrit name for Singapore, The Lion City).
