A Journey Through Time and Beauty

As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips, I have always been drawn to the stories that landscapes and towns tell. My recent adventure to Da Nang and Hoi An was no exception. The journey began with a warm welcome at the port, where our guide, Sonny, greeted us with a smile and a sign bearing our names. It was a nostalgic reminder of the road trips I used to take across America, where every stop was a new story waiting to be discovered.

Our first stop was the iconic Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, a marvel of modern engineering that spans the Han River. A Taste of Tradition

Our journey continued to the Tra Que Vegetable Village, where we enjoyed a delightful Vietnamese lunch. The village, with its lush green herbs and panoramic views, was a feast for the senses. It reminded me of the small towns I’ve visited in the Midwest, where local produce and home-cooked meals are a way of life.

Sonny’s storytelling brought the village to life, weaving tales of its 300-year-old history and the people who have tended its gardens for generations. As we savored the fresh flavors of our meal, I felt a deep connection to the land and its stories, much like the ones I’ve shared in my articles about America’s heartland.

After lunch, we made our way to Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town’s narrow alleys and vibrant streets, adorned with lanterns and flowers, were a photographer’s dream. As we wandered through the town, I was transported back to the small towns of my youth, where every corner held a new discovery.

Reflections on a Memorable Day

The highlight of our tour was undoubtedly the time spent in Hoi An. The Japanese Bridge, the Chinese Assembly Halls, and the French colonial-style houses told a story of cultural fusion and history. Sonny’s enthusiasm and knowledge made the experience all the more enriching, as he shared fascinating details about the town’s past.

As we drove back to the port, I reflected on the day’s journey. It was a reminder of why I love to travel—the chance to connect with new places, learn their stories, and share them with others.
