- Custer State Park Wildlife Loop Road - Welcome to the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park! This 18-mile scenic drive provides the best opportunity to see wildlife such as bison, burros, deer, elk, coyotes, prairie dogs, and bighorn sheep. Remember, these are wild animals, so it’s important to maintain a safe distance—no petting, feeding, or selfies with bison! Stay vigilant for wildlife crossings and enjoy the stunning surroundings safely.
- Wildlife Station Visitor Center - Next, visit the Wildlife Station Visitor Center, a delightful cabin with wooden fences. It’s a great place for a break, as there won’t be another restroom for a while. The center features restrooms, small exhibits, and information about the park’s wildlife. It’s open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM, and the parking lot is on the left for those who wish to stop by.
- Blue Bell Stables - Next on the itinerary is Blue Bell Stables, the only riding stables in Custer State Park. Open from mid-May to September, it offers trail rides for both beginners and advanced riders. Morning rides are available, and while advance booking is recommended, walk-ins are welcome if you arrive 30 minutes early.
- Mount Coolidge - To the left is Mount Coolidge, featuring the Mount Coolidge Lookout and Fire Tower at its peak. At 6,023 feet, it provides breathtaking views of the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands. In 1923, it was known as Lookout Mountain, and a man named Jack Sheehan lived here to monitor for fires. One day, he had a memorable encounter with a bear that turned out to be a pet seeking companionship!
- Legion Lake - Approaching Legion Lake, a serene location with a beach, playground, picnic areas, and a half-mile hike around the lake that takes just 15 minutes. In December 2017, the lake was part of a wildfire that burned 35,000 acres. Thanks to enhanced safety measures, visitors can now enjoy the lake without worry. Parking will be on the right soon—be sure to stop for a quick visit!
