- Chinchero - Chinchero is a quaint Andean Indian village situated high on the windswept plains of Anta at 3765m, approximately 30km from Cusco. It offers stunning views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with the Cordillera Vilcabamba and the snow-capped Salkantay peak dominating the western horizon. Chinchero is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow. Its main tourist attraction is its vibrant Sunday market, which is less tourist-oriented than the market at Pisac. The village mainly consists of adobe houses, and locals continue their daily activities in traditional attire. The village may have been significant during Inca times. The most notable remnant from this period is the massive stone wall in the main plaza, featuring ten trapezoidal niches. The construction of the wall, along with many other ruins and agricultural terraces (still in use), is attributed to Inca Tupac Yupanqui, who possibly used Chinchero as a country retreat.
- Moray - Moray is famous for its unique circular terraces, resembling a natural amphitheater. These terraces are thought to have been an agricultural laboratory for the Incas. The site comprises several circular terraces, each with a distinct microclimate. The temperature difference between the top and bottom terraces can reach up to 15°C (27°F), allowing the Incas to experiment with and acclimate various crops.
They are connected by a sophisticated irrigation system, showcasing the Incas’ advanced engineering skills. Moray’s terraces likely served as an agricultural research station, where the Incas tested crop varieties and developed farming techniques. This enabled them to optimize crop yields and adapt plants to different environmental conditions.
Walking along the paths that encircle them offers a fascinating insight into Inca ingenuity and their sophisticated approach to agriculture.
- Salinas de Maras - Discover the intriguing salt mines of Maras, where over 3,000 salt pools create a stunning mosaic on the mountainside. This ancient site, still operational today, provides a unique glimpse into traditional Andean salt production and offers spectacular photo opportunities.

- Ollantaytambo - Ollantaytambo is a charming village that retains the designs of Inca buildings, located at an altitude of 9160 feet in the province of Urubamba. Among its most impressive attractions are the ceremonial temple dedicated to water worship and a fortress that guarded the valley’s entrance to repel invasions. The temple features a series of terraces stacked atop one another, which visitors ascend via a steep stairway. The fortress is a stone colossus built between two mountains to protect the valley. The area also includes the Temple of Inti (the sun god), Incamisana, the baths of the Ñustas (princesses), the Cachiccata funerary towers, and a group of tiered and very steep terraces on a hillside. Ollantaytambo also contains the mountain called Pinculluna or Tunupa, which holds the remnants of Inca architectural structures that seem to have been a storehouse for various foodstuffs. Ollantaytambo is also a gathering place for nearby communities, such as the Huayruros de Willoq.
- Pisac - Pisac’s captivating stone block walls exhibit a balanced proportion, from their size to the perfect joints of each stone, forming a remarkable architectural complex that enchants visitors in the Sacred Valley. The word Pisac has a Quechua origin meaning partridge, a hen-like bird that inhabits the area. According to theories, this complex was somewhat similar to the “Royal Estate” of the Inca Pachacutec, which is why it has a variety of facilities such as terraces, a ceremonial room, palaces, walls, and towers all interconnected without any amalgam. Intihuatana, known as the most important ceremonial and religious site in Pisac, features buildings made of sedimentary rocks. The translation of its name from Quechua means “Sundial.” It is located at the mountain’s summit, offering a panoramic view of the entire valley. The Intihuatana is considered Pisac’s Temple of the Sun, serving as an astronomical observatory during the Inca Empire. The fineness of its carved rock is remarkable.
