Chinchero - Known for its famous Andean textile weavers, the visit begins with a brief stop at a local weaving center. Here, visitors can observe the extraction of wool from llamas and alpacas and learn how the wool is processed into their famous handicrafts.
Following this, a guided tour of the Inca site is provided, where a whitewashed church currently stands. During the Inca era, Emperor Pachacutec built his summer palace here, which was later demolished during the Spanish conquest, and the church was constructed on its ruins.
Chinchero boasts the most fertile soil in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, offering insights into the Incas’ innovative farming techniques.
Moray - The next stop is the nearby village of Moray.
This location is home to circular farming terraces dug into the ground, with each level having different temperatures. The Incas used this as an agricultural laboratory to determine the optimal weather conditions for growing crops.
Maras - Continuing the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour, the renowned and most photographed salt mines are visited. These geometric pools, built on a hillside, have existed since pre-Inca times.
Salt farmers here continue the traditional solar evaporation method. They allow natural spring water from nearby hot springs to flow into these pools and wait for it to evaporate, leaving behind salt crystals that are manually scraped out.
The salt here is pinkish in color and has a unique taste.
Urubamba - After exploring these captivating sites, the tour proceeds to Urubamba. A stop at a local restaurant offers a delightful buffet lunch. These restaurants are owned and operated by local farmers, ensuring a fresh farm-to-table meal.
Ollantaytambo - Post-lunch, the journey continues to Ollantaytambo, the former administrative capital of the Incas. This charming town is nestled between two hills, each housing an Inca ruin. The temple of the Incas is visited here.
This architecturally stunning site was sacred to the Incas. The tour includes the remains of the main plaza and some ceremonial sites. This was the location of the infamous battle of Ollantaytambo between Manco Inca and Hernando Pizarro, the Spanish conquistador, in 1531.
Although the Incas won the battle, fearing a stronger attack, they abandoned the site and sought refuge in Vilcabamba, a jungle in Peru.
Aguas Calientes - After the Sacred Valley tour, the journey continues to Ollantaytambo train station. Here, visitors board the tourist train to Aguas Calientes.
The one-and-a-half-hour ride offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks as the train winds through remote villages to Aguas Calientes in the Amazon.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, a representative will meet guests and accommodate them in an ensuite hotel room for the night.
Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Aguas Calientes - The second day of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour begins early in the morning. After breakfast at the hotel, guests board a 25-minute bus ride up the hill to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
A tour guide will meet guests here and assist with entering the citadel. The Machu Picchu ticket will be verified against the original passport by local authorities.
Machu Picchu - Inside, visitors will witness the rays of the rising sun shimmering on the Inca walls. A two-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu begins with a brief introduction to the citadel.
The tour includes the remains of the main square, ceremonial sites, temples, royal quarters, sundial clock, and more. After this immersive guided tour, there is free time to explore the citadel or simply enjoy the views.
For those who have booked to climb Huayna Picchu or journey to Machu Picchu mountain, the tour guide will direct them to the respective trailhead.
Alternatively, guests can hike to the Sun Gate. No permit is needed, and it is free of charge. This is the entrance point to the citadel for those hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, offering a panoramic view of the citadel nestled between Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu peaks.
Ollantaytambo - After the tour, the bus returns to Aguas Calientes. There is free time to enjoy the natural hot springs or have lunch at a local restaurant.
At 04:00 PM, the tourist train departs back to Ollantaytambo.
Cusco - Upon arrival, a representative will meet guests and transfer them back to their hotel in Cusco, arriving by 09:30 PM.
