Highly recommend - I did a solo trip and the guides were super helpful through the whole process. José even helped me get a healing oil in Cusco while he was working as well. Jose also took pictures for me and made sure the whole group was safe in the high altitude and the snow/rain conditions

Great experience - Had a great time!, You will spend about six hours on the bus three hours in each direction, but it’s well worth it! It’s a once in a lifetime trip! Make sure to wear warm clothing if you’re visiting during the winter months ; gloves, hat, thin, winter jacket and always bring a little extra money, just in case you want to use the horses or the motorbikes on the way up. And definitely buy the coca mint candies that will help you with the high elevation throughout your stay. Jorge was an excellent very professional tour guide.

Great experience, recommend doing it on your own time. - We opted for this tour vs walking because my partner is not as physically fit and was concerned about the altitude. The best parts of this tour was seeing Rainbow Mountain itself and riding thenATVs most of the way up. On our day the entire mountain was covered in fog so we actually never got to see the classic view that’s in all the pictures for ourselves, but we’re not mad about that, can’t help the weather. Just being at the top 16,000 feet up was incredible. The ride up on ATV was just as beautiful, stunning, and worthwhile. If we had not taken the ATVs we’d have had opportunity to stop and take pictures of the scenery we could see along the way, but when you take the ATV that’s not possible. The only issue we had with our tour was the pace of the tour, our pick up at our hotel was at 4:30am. At 6:30am we stopped at a buffet all tours stop at for a very quick breakfast. I mean, you literally had just enough time to grab food and go. I didn’t have time to use the bathroom so the next 2 hour drive to the mountain was a little uncomfortable for me until we got to the mountain and could use the restroom there. But in doing that I got the impression we were taking time from getting to the ATVs. We each got our own ATV. We spent a few minutes driving in a circle in the ATV lot before heading up. We got to the parking spot for the ATVs by 9:22, our guide told us we had 50 minutes, by 10:20 we had to be back on thenATVs, so by 10:10 we had to be walking back down. The walk up was easy at first but I hit a point my heart raced and was out of breath and had to stop and try to take deep breaths to recover. The top of the mountain was windy, cold, cloudy, and beautiful. We took pictures with some Llamas hanging out up there. We waited the full 50 minutes to see if the clouds would move but they never did. By 10 we headed back down to the ATVs and took pictures along the way of views we could see before driving the ATVs back down. After returning to the bus my partner and I swear we heard him say at some point we were going to stop at a Llama farm, but that never happened. On the return journey it was my partner who needed the bathroom but didn’t get a chance to. It felt like it took longer to get back to the dinner area for lunch. I think we got there by 1:30 or 2. Everyone was extremely hungry from the light breakfast and activity, but again only 30 mins to grab food, eat, and use the restroom. Not much time at all but it does take 4 hours there and back. We never stopped at a Llama farm because he said we took too long, but our tour guide did stop at a bread shop on the way back to Cusco and bought himself bread, which I thought was weird. We arrived back in Cusco around 3:30pm. Everyone was dropped off in the same location, at Plaza de Armas. I am not sure if it was supposed to be direct at the hotels like pick up was, but it was there. Exhausting day, we didn’t see the mountain, but still very nice.

Underwhelming Day at Rainbow Mountain - We scheduled an ATV trip to Rainbow Mountain after completing four days of hiking the Inca Trail, which was beneficial for acclimatization to the altitude. However, I noted that the other couple on our tour struggled with altitude sickness throughout the day so keep this in mind when planning excursions to higher altitudes.
A major area for improvement is communication regarding gear requirements. The weather turned out to be quite cold, with rain and hail. Thankfully, our family was well-prepared with rain pants, coats, hats, and gloves, but the other couple, dressed in jeans, found themselves quite uncomfortable and had to purchase items on the way.
The ATVs themselves were in good condition; however, if you are seeking an exhilarating ride, be aware that the tour requires you to follow the slowest driver, which can limit the overall thrill.
The scenery on the way to Rainbow Mountain was stunning, featuring lush green mountains, llamas, and local farmers. Unfortunately, the mountain itself was a bit underwhelming, primarily due to snow coverage, making it resemble any other typical mountain.
The transition from ATVs to motorcycles was confusing. Upon being dropped off at the top, we received a slip of paper with a number, which was not adequately explained. After exploring the area, I learned we had to wait for our designated motorcycle to pick us up. After over 30 minutes of waiting—watching numerous other motorcycles come and go—I was finally "rescued" by our guide, who arrived on an ATV and seemed annoyed that I was "late". On our way down, I noticed my "designated" motorcycle broken down with a stranded passenger, which explained why I had been waiting so long.
On a positive note, our guide did allow us to enjoy a half-mile segment of the ATV ride at speed on the way back, which was genuinely fun. The return trip was quiet, and we stopped for lunch at a spot we visited for breakfast, where I enjoyed a delicious salad. However, the ending of our journey was a bit chaotic. As we approached Cuzco, our guide abruptly woke us up and instructed us to be ready to disembark the van. When I asked if we were being dropped where we were picked up, he said "close." Suddenly, the van stopped, and we were told to get out, leaving me disoriented in an unfamiliar area. Fortunately, one of our kids recognized the corner, allowing us to navigate our way back to our Airbnb.
Overall, I found the day a bit disappointing. I highly recommend preparing with appropriate clothing and hoping for clearer weather to enjoy all that Rainbow Mountain has to offer.
