Cusco - In the morning, we will set out to explore the capital of the ancient Inca Empire, beginning our tour with the Sun God’s temple, the “Koricancha.” We will then visit the cathedral, an impressive structure housing numerous paintings from Cusco’s school of fine arts. Afterward, we will leave the city center to visit the four most significant sites in Cusco: Tambomachay, Pucapucara, Q’enqo, and Sacsaywaman. The rest of the day is free.
Cusco – Sacred Valley of the Incas
Sacred Valley of the Incas - Today, we will explore the Sacred Valley, starting with the Inca ruins of Pisac, which include agricultural terraces, ceremonial fountains, solar observatories, and the region’s largest cemetery with over 10,000 burials. On our way back, we will stop at the craft market in Pisac town. Our tour continues to the town of Ollantaytambo, where we will walk through its small, ancestral streets dating back to the fifteenth century. We will then take a train to Aguas Calientes, where we will check into a hotel at the foot of Machu Picchu.
Macchu Picchu
Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu - Early in the morning, we will take a bus to the most famous Inca site in the country: Machu Picchu, meaning “Old Mountain” in Quechua. We will thoroughly explore the lost city of the Incas, including its agricultural and urban sectors and its incredible mountainside constructions. As the morning mist lifts, you will witness an evolving, breathtaking view with the rising sun. We will then walk through the streets of the Inca citadel, exploring its neighborhoods, squares, royal houses, agricultural areas, roads, and observatories. In the afternoon, we will descend to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Ollantaytambo. Additional activities available on-site (not included in the package and must be booked in advance): You can add the ascent of Huaynapicchu or Machupicchu, subject to availability. These mountains are part of the Machupicchu Citadel landscape and have different schedules and entrances, as they require more time to climb and visit.
Maras Salt Flat - Moray - Chinchero - Cusco
Maras - After breakfast, we will visit the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo under the first rays of the sun. We will then head to the Maras salt mines, which date back to pre-Inca times and are still exploited by local inhabitants. Next, we will visit Moray, an ancient Inca agricultural laboratory used over five hundred years ago to test the resistance of various plant species to altitude. Finally, we will stop at Chinchero, the “rainbow city,” to visit its ruins before returning to Cusco at the end of the day.
