Humantay Lake - The tour begins with a hotel pickup in Cusco at 4:00 am. Once everyone is ready, the journey to Mollepata will take about 2 hours. A brief stop in Mollepata allows for the purchase of snacks. The hike starts from Challacancha (3,600 masl / 11,500 ft), marking the beginning of the Salkantay adventure, where the team supporting the journey can be met. A 2-hour hike to Soraypampa follows, passing through stunning landscapes. A delicious lunch awaits at Soraypampa. After lunch, the group will head to the popular destination, “The Humantay Lagoon (4,200 masl / 13,779 ft),” which takes approximately 2 hours to reach. After a fulfilling day, the return to the lunch spot marks the start of a 3-hour hike to Ichupata, where the night will be spent near the Salkantay mountain with a spectacular view.
Ichupata - Salkantay Pass - Inca Channel - Paucarcancha
Salkantay Trail - The day starts early with a hot drink to kick off the morning. There is time to pack and enjoy a hearty breakfast prepared by the trekking chef. The steep 2-hour ascent to the Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the route, begins. At the top, breathtaking views of the valley, lakes, and wildlife such as condors and hawks can be enjoyed. The descent leads to the lunch spot in Inca Canal, a flat area with views of the beautiful valleys and the Salcantay River. After lunch, the descent continues to the community of Paucarcancha, located next to an Inca site, which serves as the campsite for the night.
Paucarcancha - Huayllabamba - Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo Sanctuary - On the third day, the journey continues on the Classic Inca Trail, starting with an early morning descent. The walk from Pampacahuana to Huayllabamba takes about an hour. Upon arrival at Huayllabamba, the Inca site of the same name is explored. The journey proceeds past the Inca ruin of Llactapata, with ample time for exploration. The journey continues downhill for 3 more hours to the lunch point at KM 82. After lunch, a company bus takes the group to the town of Ollantaytambo, where a comfortable stay in a three-star hotel awaits. There is ample time for a well-deserved shower and rest in preparation for the next day’s short Inca trail to Machu Picchu.
Ollantaytambo - Chachabamba - Wiñaywayna - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes
Wiñay Wayna - Early in the morning, the guide picks up the group at the hotel to catch the first train to Chachabamba (KM 104). The hike begins here, following the original Inca trail through the beautiful Andean mountains. The first Inca ruins encountered are those of Chachabamba, a small archaeological complex believed to have been a guardhouse for Machu Picchu. From here, the trail gradually climbs for four hours to reach 2,650 meters. The site of Wiñay Wayna, meaning “Eternal Youth,” is visited. The name comes from the orchids dotting the landscape, making Wiñay Wayna perhaps the most beautiful place on the Trail. After touring the site and having lunch, the journey continues to the “Sun Gate (Inti Punku),” offering a majestic view of Machu Picchu. A bus then takes the group to the Machu Picchu town of Aguas Calientes, where dinner and a comfortable hotel stay await.
Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco
Machu Picchu Cusco - Today is a wonderful day, as it is finally time to visit Machu Picchu. After an early breakfast at the hotel, only a backpack with essentials is needed. The hotel will store luggage while visiting Machu Picchu. The bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu takes about 25 minutes. Once at Machu Picchu, a guide provides a two-hour tour, sharing insights into the history and culture of the Inca Empire. There is also ample time for personal exploration. It is recommended to return to Aguas Calientes no later than 2 hours before the train’s departure. The return train ride from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo takes about 2 hours. In Ollantaytambo, staff will be waiting to transport the group back to Cusco and drop them off at their hotel.
