Thrills and Traditions: An Epic 4x4 Adventure in Madeira
When the call of adventure beckons, there’s no resisting. The East of Madeira Adventure promised a day filled with breathtaking views, cultural immersion, and thrilling off-road escapades. Join me as I recount a journey that took us from the peaks of Pico do Arieiro to the charming village of Santana, and beyond.
Conquering Peaks and Valleys
The day began with the sun rising over the rugged landscape of Madeira, casting a golden hue over the island’s peaks. Our group of thrill-seekers, always on the hunt for the next adrenaline rush, was ready to tackle the East of Madeira Adventure. Our guide, Nuno, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of an unforgettable journey. We piled into the 4x4, a beast of a vehicle affectionately named ‘The Jaguar,’ and set off towards our first destination: Pico do Arieiro.
As we ascended the winding roads, the anticipation in the air was palpable. The 4x4 roared to life, handling the rugged terrain with ease. Upon reaching Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak on the island, we were greeted by a breathtaking panorama. The clouds lay beneath us like a sea of cotton, and the peaks pierced through like islands in an endless ocean. We were given time to explore, and I took the opportunity to venture along a short Lavada walk, feeling the crisp mountain air invigorate my senses.
A Taste of Tradition
Our next stop was the charming village of Santana, known for its iconic A-frame houses. The journey there was an adventure in itself, as Nuno expertly navigated the off-road paths, each bump and jolt adding to the thrill of the ride. Upon arrival, we were immersed in the rich culture and history of the area. The traditional houses stood as a testament to the island’s heritage, and I couldn’t resist capturing their beauty through my lens.
Lunch was at Restaurante Calhau in São Jorge, a delightful spot chosen by Nuno. The menu was diverse, catering to all tastes, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. Sharing a meal with Nuno, who joined us at the table, added a personal touch to the experience. His stories of the island’s history and his passion for Madeira were infectious, making the meal all the more enjoyable.
Rum, Views, and Dolphins
With our appetites satisfied, we continued to Porto da Cruz, home to the North Mill Distillery. Here, we witnessed the fascinating process of turning sugar cane into rum. The machinery, powered by steam and fueled by cane pulp, was a marvel of engineering. A rum tasting session followed, a welcome treat that warmed us from the inside out.
The day was far from over as we made our way to Miradouro do Pico do Facho, a high viewpoint offering sweeping views of Machico town, the Dragons Tail trails, and even the airport. The sight was nothing short of spectacular, and to our delight, a pod of dolphins made an appearance in the sea below, visible through a telescope set up by a fellow traveler.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we reflected on the day’s adventures. Nuno’s knowledge and passion for the island had made the experience truly special. The East of Madeira Adventure had delivered on its promise of big views, culture, and fun, leaving us with memories to last a lifetime.
