Our expedition starts by visiting the Mirador do Pico dos Barcelos, which offers an expansive view of the bay and Funchal city. From here, we head onwards to Eira do Serrado, a picturesque vantage point elevated at 1094 meters above Curral das Freiras parish. Our next stop is the quaint hamlet of Curral das Freiras.
The large basin where Curral das Freiras is nestled was shaped either by erosion (the prevailing theory) or volcanic activity (a belief some still hold). Due to its isolation, the village inhabitants live primarily off the land. The locally grown chestnuts are a scrumptious treat in daily meals. In honour of this, an annual ‘Chestnut Festival’ is celebrated, an event that has brought the village renown.
