- Sunscreen, please do not use aerosol sunscreen as it turns the seat cushions and gel coat orange and kills the coral reefs!
- spare change of clothes in case you feel like hitting happy hour after the boat trip
- sunglasses, hat and long sleeve loose fit rash guard to protect yourself from the sun
- towel or “quick dry” towel (aka… sham wow) to dry off after you exit the water

Directions: The small square parking lot immediately across from Morgans Mango and Margarita Phil’s is the best place to unload guests and gear. There are a number of free and pay to park areas throughout Cruz Bay.

Absolute Best! - Captain Ryan was outstanding—fun, knowledgeable, and incredibly likeable. This was our first time visiting St. John, and seeing the island from the water made it all the more special. He knew all the best spots, shared great stories, and made the whole day feel easy and unforgettable. If you're considering a boat tour, do not miss the chance to go with Island Roots Charters and ask for Ryan. Highly recommend!

A Perfect Day at Sea with Island Roots Charters - If there were six stars, Island Roots Charters would get them. Our family’s day trip from St. John to the BVI was pure magic from bow to stern.
We started at the Baths on Virgin Gorda, where the kids were convinced pirate treasure had to be hiding behind every rock. (Spoiler: the real treasure was the view.) After an epic snorkel stop with crystal-clear water and rainbow fish that looked like they swam out of a painting, we cruised over to Jost Van Dyke. Dad bravely tackled “Level Three” Painkillers—yes, it’s a cocktail, and yes, he lived to tell the tale.
From start to finish, the crew made everything easy, safe, and unforgettable. Friendly, knowledgeable, and just plain fun to be around, they turned a great trip into the best family adventure we’ve ever had.
If you’re visiting St. John and want to see the BVI in style—whether you’re hunting for pirate loot, sipping cocktails in paradise, or snorkeling in nature’s aquarium—Island Roots Charters is the way to go.

Wonderful charter with amazing service - Amazing trip! Captain Troy met us at the dock right on time in the morning. He customized the trip right then and there based on what we wanted to see. He even called ahead and coordinated with the sea turtles so we could swim with them (I’m kidding, but don’t tell my children). Highly recommend this charter! Troy was knowledgeable about the islands, gave us tips for things to do the rest of the week, and made sure we were well taken care of during our charter. Book them!

Highly recommend this charter company! - Wonderful experience! Capt Ivan took us all around St John to wonderful snorkeling spots where we swam with sea turtles and he shared a lot of island history with us. We loved lunch at Lime Out. Super clean and comfortable boat with everything we needed and more. The provided snorkel equipment was top notch. We had our teens and elementary age kid with us and a great time was had by all. We accidentally left things on board and Capt Ivan made sure we got them— he went above and beyond! Highly recommend 10/10

Family Boat Day - Our Captain, Ivan, was prompt to pick us up at the dock. The boat was clean and well maintained and extremely comfortable for our party of 8. Ivan discussed with us everything we wanted to do for the day and felt confident he had some great places to go that would meet the needs of our group. We went cliff diving, snorkeling, Pizza Pi for lunch and some great little remote islands we docked up at and hung out. He showed us the islands and was very knowledgeable. We had the best day!!

Best Day!! - Had a great day with Captain Ryan. Everything was perfect from the start. Ease of booking, timely communication, parking information, what to bring. The boat was at the dock and our adventure started promptly at 8:45am. We couldn’t have enjoyed Ryan more! He was knowledgeable, flexible, thoughtful, but most importantly he was easy to spend all day with. He managed to get all of our requests met and took us to spots that were off our radar. This experience has been a highlight of this trip. Thank you Island Roots and especially Captain Ryan!

Awesome full day charter with Ryan - Our family booked the full day charter from St Thomas. Ryan was fantastic and helped us map out a great day of fun. We went to the baths, Willie T’s, a couple of beautiful beaches, and Soggy Dollar. He was very knowledgeable about the islands and had a lot of interesting facts to share. An awesome day….would highly recommend!

Let’s snorkel! - April 22, 2025
We go with Island Roots every time we visit St. John and have never been disappointed. Snorkeling is our focus, and Capt. Ivan had great recommendations! Taking weather conditions into consideration, we hit 7 snorkeling spots along the south side of the island. We love experiencing places accessible only by boat. Island Roots offers a comfortable and fun filled day, a highlight of our trip!

Best part of our trip to St Thomas!! - Beautiful boat, Captain Troy was great, amazing experience. He took us to several gorgeous snorkeling spots where we saw sea turtles, tons of pretty fish and even a huge lobster!
