Plitvice Lakes National Park (In Croatian: Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera, unofficially known as Plitvice, pronounced as [plîtʋitse]), enjoys the distinction of being among the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia. It made its entry into the UNESCO World Heritage register in 1979. Renowned internationally for its staggering array of lakes set in cascades, the park boasts of 16 visible lakes. These bodies of water are a culmination of numerous small and underground karst rivers converging together. The lakes, interconnected in nature, adhere to the direction of water flow. They are demarcated by natural travertine barriers created by moss, algae, and bacterial activity. The fragile travertine barriers result from a complex interaction between water, air and plant life. Layers of hardened plants and bacteria accumulate over each other to form these barriers, which exhibit a growth rate of approximately 1 cm (0.4 in) annually.
