Highlights
  • NEW BOMBAY SWEETS MARADANA - Chicken Cheese Ball

The simplest and most delicious cheese ball you’ll ever taste. Made with cream cheese and canned chicken!

  • Zylen Tea - Tea leaves are a renowned and favored crop of Sri Lanka. Introduced during the Colonial period, Sri Lankan tea has set the first and leading standard worldwide.
  • Taste of Asia - In Sri Lanka, hoppers are thin, bowl-shaped pancakes named after the pan that shapes them. These crispy bowls are perfect for fillings. As the batter begins to cook, chefs crack a whole egg over it and cover the pan.
  • Yarl Restaurant - Pittu is a traditional breakfast dish made from steamed rice flour mixed with grated coconut and salt. It is cooked in a pittu bambuwa, a cylindrical bamboo vessel wrapped with coir.

The rice flour and coconut mixture is placed inside this bamboo structure and steamed over a pot of water. If you love seafood and spicy dishes, you must try Sri Lankan Crab Curry. This Asian dish, made with crab meat, shallots, and milk, pairs well with steamed rice or pulao. However, it can also be enjoyed with Pittu.

  • Wellawatte Beach - Isso (prawn) vadai is a popular snack at Galle Face Green. These crisp, deep-fried lentil patties topped with small prawns and drizzled with tangy chili sauce are a delight. Enjoying a plate of these while watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean is an experience that surpasses any five-star restaurant. Many stalls sell prawn vadai, but a favorite among locals is run by Rahuft and his uncle. This is their recipe.
  • Pilawoos - Kollupitiya - Kottu roti, also spelled kothu roti, is a Sri Lankan dish made of chopped roti, a meat curry of your choice, scrambled egg, onions, and chilies.

Great way to experience Colombo's food and sights! - Mr Maran as our driver and guide. He was punctual and friendly, and expertly brought us through the busy roads to experience true Colombo traffic! The food was really good and the servings were very generous! Thank you Mr Maran for the wonderful tour!

Fabulous tour well worth it - This is a great introduction to Colombo and Sri Lankan food, I can’t recommend it highly enough. We arrived in Colombo today and booked this tour literally a couple of hours before it started. Romesh picked us up from our hotel, and drove us around the city, which was a great way to see some of the sites and plan what to go back to. We stopped at various locations around the city to sample traditional dishes, starting with cheesy chicken balls which taste much better than they sound. We sampled lots of dishes in different locations, with the hoppers being our absolute faves. The only criticism, not really a criticism, is that there was just so much food. By the time we got to the last one we were so full that we could hardly eat anything but we did manage to fit in the curd and honey dessert which delicious. Romesh was a great tour guide, he is really knowledgeable about Colombo, pointing out sites of interest and providing relevant information. He also knows a lot about the food too and carefully explained everything about the dishes. We felt very comfortable with Romesh and he looked after us really well. This was a great tour and we both loved it. Tomorrow when we are wandering about we will know what the different dishes are and what to order. Thank you Romesh you are a star 🤩

Exciting and I formative Tour. Definately go by Tuk Tuk to see heaps - Vizeer was a great driver who took us on an incredible trip through the streets and backstreets of Colombo. Just be sure NOT TO EAT before this tour. Food is spicy and hot. We got to the second restaurant and was unable to continue eating although we tried. Felt bad about that because we were trying local foods. We had already tasted some interesting street foods Vizeer bought for us from street vendors prior to visiting the restaurants. We visited a tea shop. Be sure to take a little cash as the stops were interesting and you may wish to purchase.

Best way to experience local food! - What an amazing way to see the city and experience the local food! We would never had tried the variety if it wasn’t for our guide Maran taking us to the best local spots. Come hungry as the portions are huge and oh so tasty. Maran was friendly and informative. A must-do activity in Colombo!

If you love food and exploring a city, this tour is for you! - We only had one night in Colombo and wanted to see the city as well as enjoy some of the cuisine and this tour allowed us to do both. Not only did we have SO much food, trying a variety of dishes, we got to visit different parts of the city and experience the culture firsthand. As someone who loves a food tour, and always looks to do one whenever I travel, I would 100% recommend this one. A fantastic and memorable experience and one you won’t regret.

An authentic expeirence to say the least - It's worth a punt if you're new to Sri Lanka, and it'll give you an idea of what the country and the culture is about - even if not all of it is entirely to your liking! Overall, it is genuinely nice to have a drive around town in a tuc-tuc (even though you probably will have done this already) and experience the foods of Sri Lanka. As an ex-resident of the city I can tell you that the overall experience is *very* authentic. But don't forget that Sri Lanka is a 3rd world country. The language barrier is high and trying to ascertain whether the next stop is a snack or a full meal (in other words, how much you should eat on this stop) isn't so easy! You won't get a rich origins-story from your guide, and your food will be "given to" you (as opposed to "shared with" you). Try to enjoy it for what it is. Eating with your *right* hand from a metal plate placed on a cheap canteen table in a run-down concrete shack at the end of a tunnel that's offset from the main diesel fuelled Galle Road can - if nothing else - be described as an authentic Sri Lankan experience. What else is there to do in a city anyway? If you don't want to make the effort to connect with its grass-roots, then why did you come in the first place?
