Stroll through its medieval streets, admire the noble palaces, and discover the secrets of the renowned Etruscan Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A journey through time, where ancient art and stunning views await.
- Necropoli di Tarquinia - The Etruscan Necropolis of Monterozzi is situated on an upland east of Tarquinia (Viterbo) and features approximately 6,000 tombs, most of which are spaces carved into the rock and topped by tumuli, with the oldest dating back to the seventh century BC.
- Santa Maria di Castello - The magnificent Romanesque Church of Saint Mary in the Castle deserves its own chapter. The church is located in the oldest part of Tarquinia, where the Castrum Cargnetum was situated, forming the nucleus of ancient Corneto.
To reach it, walk along Via di Porta Castello, pass through the ancient gate with the Tower of Dante and the Tower of Matilde di Canossa in the background. Just a few steps to be transported 1,000 years back!
The atmosphere here is simply enchanting, especially at night when the streets are lit only by street lamps… the perfect place for a romantic walk through history.
- Museo Nazionale Tarquiniense - Located within Palazzo Vitelleschi, the National Etruscan Museum of Tarquinia is undoubtedly one of the city’s main attractions.
The Palazzo Vitelleschi is worth a visit on its own!
Built by Cardinal Giovanni Vitelleschi between 1436 and 1439 with a design by Giovanni Dalmata, it is a true architectural masterpiece, thanks to the simultaneous presence of Gothic and Renaissance elements.
- Palazzo dei Priori - Enjoy a pleasant walk through the narrow streets of Tarquinia’s Historical Center. In Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, you will find the Palazzo Comunale and the monumental eighteenth-century fountain.
- Parrocchia Ss. Margherita E Martino - The Cathedral of Saints Margherita and Martino, constructed around 1260, is located in the square of the same name, just a few steps from Palazzo Vitelleschi, and is part of the diocese of Civitavecchia and Tarquinia.
Elevated to the rank of Cathedral on December 5, 1435, during the fifteenth century, the cathedral was expanded by Bishop Bartolomeo Vitelleschi, but was unfortunately destroyed in 1643 by a devastating fire.
- Tuscania - Discover Tuscania, a charming town where history and nature blend seamlessly. Wander through its medieval streets, admire the stunning Basilica of San Pietro, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Tuscia countryside. An unforgettable journey into the heart of ancient Lazio.
- Museo Archeologico di Tuscania - Situated in the Franciscan Monastery founded in 1247, adjacent to the Church of S. Maria del Riposo. The first section of the Museum opened in 1988; it consists of four rooms on the ground floor showcasing the funerary complex of the noble Hellenistic period (4th-2nd century BC). Of particular importance are the funerary complexes from three rock tombs of the Curunas family: alongside nenfro sarcophagi with lids depicting the deceased, there are Faliscan, Ceretane, Vulcenti, and/or Tarquiniesi ceramics, and Chiusine. Materials related to bronze or the female world banquet are of particular significance. In 1997, two upstairs rooms were opened to the public, one dedicated to the history of the monastery and the old center of Tuscania, the other to the oldest testimonies from the necropolis (7th century BC).
New exhibition sections are forthcoming.
