Exploring Madeira, with opportunity to stop and see more before moving onto next place, good value. - Tour takes 1.5 hours, great commentary on route, only 20 euros, hop on and hop off in places you wish to see more off, worthwhile.

Avoid these buses - Absolutely no reason to pay 20 Euros per person to use this service. There are two lines (red and blue). And most stops at both lines are completely uninteresting, except Monte (blue line) and Câmara do Lobos (red line). Both these places are accessible by regular buses at a couple of Euros. And just as quick. Of course it’s my personal opinion wether something is interesting or not, but I got the feeling most people had the same feeling, as these two places were the only places people actually got off the bus. To top it all, buses were late already from the starting point. Not recommended! I’m pretty sure the cable car to Monte would be a far better option.

Disappointing. Not the best value option available. - I normally love the hop-on-hop-off bus experience you find in most major cities around the world. It's generally a great way to see the environs, particularly if you have limited time. However, this is not the case with the Funchal Red & Blue routes. This is not good value, especially given the unimaginative routes and poor quality pre-recorded commentary (very sparse information with little detail on local 'landmarks', etc.). Also, expect to hang around as the Red Bus frequency varies anywhere between 15 to 90 mins. Further, the open-top double-decker Red route busses really struggle with some of the hills they have to navigate, huffing and puffing. Whilst this profit-making operation can do little about the weather conditions, I would expect the bus to be suitably maintained and water tight below the top-deck. There are often frequent occasions Madeira suffers a downfall. When this happens, as it did for us, the rain just pours through gaps to drench all the lower deck seats, the windows steam up…very unpleasant. Air conditioning would have helped with the condensation; but it's my understanding it's either never switched on or not available. There are much better value options…why not take one of the frequent local busses, maybe a local taxi, or even hire a car (they're suprisingly cheap on the island)?

Very poor/no value for money. - Absolutely abysmal. The earphones did not work. Got replacements but still no commentary on two different buses. Stonewalled when the agent and bus driver were approached. 40euros. Will try the second”free” trip (same journey) but do not hold out much hope. I understand the yellow buses are superior.

Avoid - This is a great tour bus to take - if you are a fan of decrypting illegible maps. The map contained about 4 different tours, and it was almost impossible to decipher them. Cluelessly, we chose the red route. Undeterred, I was excited to sit up top and enjoy the audio commentary. This would have been fantastic - if I were an audio engineer looking for some equipment to fix. We had to move around the bus about five times to find two headphone outlets that worked. Following this we drove around Funchal old town, wondering when we could get off. We are used to drivers who ring a bell when the bus stops. Instead of our first stop in the old town, we were treated to a journey ten minutes to the middle of nowhere. Got off in despair, but not before asking the driver why he didn't stop. He replied with as much jobs worthy rudeness as he could muster "I did stop". In short, AVOID.
