Snagov Monastery - Constructed around 1408 in Byzantine style with Romanian influences, this monastery is located on a small island in the northern part of Lake Snagov. During his rule, Vlad Tepes enhanced the monastery with a fortified stone wall and a narrow bridge to the mainland, which visitors still use today. Antim Ivireanul, a notable scholar of the era, published the first Romanian books using the Latin alphabet here. Some historians suggest that after his assassination by his boyars in the battle at Codrii Vlasiei near Snagov, Vlad Tepes Dracula’s body was secretly buried at the monastery in the Orthodox tradition. Today, visitors can see the tombstone in front of the altar, believed to be Dracula’s resting place.
-
Caldarusani Monastery - Explore the remarkable Căldărușani Monastery, a spiritual sanctuary founded in the 17th century by Wallachian ruler Matei Basarab. Situated by a peaceful lake, this fortified monastery has been pivotal in Romania’s religious history, serving as a hub of monastic life and Orthodox scholarship. Visitors can admire its historic frescoes, ancient manuscripts, and the tranquil atmosphere where monks uphold centuries-old traditions. The monastery’s Icons Museum offers a fascinating collection of religious artworks that highlight Romania’s rich Orthodox heritage.
