• Waimakariri - As the journey progresses through the Selwyn District, visitors will be welcomed by the charming western town of Springfield, where the route turns towards Alpine Jets. Here, guests can immerse themselves in the wonders of the Waimakariri, a place so captivating that Jet Boating was invented here in Christchurch! For those opting out of this activity, there are delightful walks, scenic views, and opportunities to cuddle sheep.
• Lake Lyndon - An ideal stop for capturing a quick photo of a stunning lake framed by the Southern Alps.
• Castle Hill - Once back in the van, the tour continues to Castle Hill. These ancient limestone rocks stand majestically on the grassy hills and were once submerged in the ocean! Over time, they have eroded into the incredible unique shapes seen today. This landscape might be familiar from films like Lord of the Rings and Narnia! Indeed, it is. Additionally, while exploring the rocks, visitors will likely encounter climbers and boulderers, as this location is a haven for such activities. This is a self-guided exploration, allowing guests to discover this natural beauty independently.
• Otira Viaduct Lookout - Also known as Deaths Corner! The Otira Viaduct Lookout offers a breathtaking view of the national park in all its splendor. This bridge is the sole reason driving through Arthurs Pass is feasible! It spans an impressive 440 meters and is a fantastic spot for photographing the bridge and the surrounding scenery. As a bonus, visitors might spot a cheeky Kea, the mischievous Alpine Parrot of New Zealand.
• Arthur’s Pass National Park - Departing the lookout, the tour heads towards Arthur’s Pass village. Along the way, travelers will enjoy the stunning backdrop of the majestic Southern Alps up close. Upon arrival, there is an opportunity to either walk the Devil’s Punch Bowl or explore the local shop. Lunch can also be enjoyed here.
• Devils Punchbowl Walking Track - This walking track takes approximately 1 hour and features a gradual incline with steps leading to a magnificent 131-meter-tall waterfall. The fitness level required is low to moderate as the path winds through bush and forest.
• Cave Stream Scenic Reserve - On the return journey, a brief stop at Cave Stream is made. This beautiful spot is perfect for stretching the legs and snapping a few quick photos. Please note that entering the cave is not possible.
• Porters Pass - Reflect on the pass driven up at the start of the day. The views here are particularly enhanced during the winter months when snow is present.
