Exploring Chichen Itza: A Classic VW Beetle Adventure
When the opportunity to explore Chichen Itza in a classic VW Beetle presented itself, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, adventure, and a refreshing cenote swim.
Cruising in a Classic VW Beetle
The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself behind the wheel of a classic VW Beetle, its vibrant paint job reminiscent of a racing car. The nostalgia of driving this iconic vehicle was palpable, and it set the tone for the adventure that lay ahead. As a surfer who’s spent countless hours chasing waves along the coasts of Central America, the open road felt like a different kind of wave to ride. The Beetle hummed along the highway, the wind tousling my hair, as we made our way to the legendary Chichen Itza.
Our guide, a former professional photographer, was a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. He shared stories of the Mayan civilization, painting vivid pictures of their rich history and culture. The drive was long, but the anticipation of exploring one of the New Seven Wonders of the World kept my spirits high. The journey was as much a part of the experience as the destination itself, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of freedom and adventure that mirrored my surfing escapades.
Exploring the Mystical Chichen Itza
Arriving at Chichen Itza, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the ancient ruins. The towering El Castillo pyramid stood majestically against the clear blue sky, a testament to the architectural prowess of the Mayans. Our guide led us through the site, explaining the significance of each structure and the stories they held. It was fascinating to learn about the two distinct Mayan eras represented in the architecture, each reflecting the changing politics and beliefs of the time.
As we wandered through the site, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the Mayans’ deep connection to the land and my own love for the ocean. Both are forces of nature that demand respect and understanding. The energy of the place was palpable, and I found myself lost in thought, contemplating the mysteries of this ancient civilization.
A Refreshing Dip in a Cenote
After a morning of exploration, the promise of a refreshing swim in a cenote was too tempting to resist. We drove to Hacienda Oxman, where the cool, clear waters awaited. The cenote was a hidden gem, a natural oasis surrounded by lush greenery. I took a moment to soak in the tranquility before diving into the inviting waters.
The sensation of the cool water against my skin was invigorating, a stark contrast to the warm sun above. Floating in the cenote, I felt a sense of peace and contentment that I often find while surfing. It was a reminder of the simple joys in life and the beauty of nature’s wonders.
Our day concluded with a leisurely stroll through the charming town of Valladolid. The cobblestone streets and colonial architecture provided a picturesque backdrop as we sipped on cool drinks beside the cathedral. It was the perfect end to a day filled with adventure and discovery, a reminder that the journey is just as important as the destination.
