Crowded and chaotic - mass tourism at its worst - We arrived at our first ‘stop’ on the tour without any mention of where we were or what we were doing. We were herded into an overpriced souvenir shop where dozens of other tourists were also wandering around, confused. We learned that this is where we officially check in for the tour. After checking in, we were corralled to a corner of the store to await further instruction. After it became apparent that our original driver had disappeared, we learned that we would be boarding a new bus. Had I known that, I would not have left my bag on the first bus! After informing a couple different guides of my missing bag, the only reassurance they could give me was that my bag might end up in their office at the end of the day. Thankfully, someone was looking out for me and my bag was returned to me before starting the day’s activities. After leaving the store and driving for a couple hours, we arrived at a “Mayan village” where we would have lunch, but the place was more of a Mayan Disneyland, as the facilities were clearly built to accommodate busloads of tourists. We waited for the earlier crowd to trickle out before being funnelled into the dining hall. My water bottle, which I bought on-site only 5 minutes prior, was confiscated by staff as I entered the hall, which was especially upsetting as I wasn’t feeling well and wanted to stay hydrated. The next stop was Chichén Itzá. Due to a medical issue, I was unable to see the ruins, and my friend and I decided that we should leave the tour. Upon explaining the situation to our main guide, my friend was given no sympathy, and instead was asked to record a video declaration that we are leaving the tour that would presumably absolve the company of any liability. All in all, the tour was very chaotic and we did not feel that we were well-taken care of. I would caution those booking this and similar pre-packaged tours. While this type of tour may be typical for the Cancún area and enjoyable to some, it was not a pleasant experience for me. I would suggest opting for a more unique and authentic experience (at other, less visited sites), either on your own or through a smaller/independent tour company.
