• Doi Suthep - Wat Phra That Doi Suthep has been a revered sanctuary in Chiang Mai for centuries. Visitors to this province often make it a point to ascend and pay homage to the sacred relics. It is said that those who do not visit this site have not truly experienced Chiang Mai.

  According to the history of Doi Suthep, it is believed that this mountain was once the dwelling of a hermit named “Suthewa,” which aligns with the name Suthep, given to this majestic mountain. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was constructed in the early 19th century during the reign of King Kue Na Thammikarat, the sixth ruler of Chiang Mai, to house the relics brought from Si Satchanalai.

• Wat Pha Lat - Wat Pha Lat was initially established during the reign of King Kue Na as a tribute to the quest for a site to enshrine relics. According to legend, during the construction of Phra That Doi Suthep, an elephant carrying the relics journeyed towards Doi Oi Chang, west of the city. King Kue Na, along with Phaya Thai from Sukhothai and the Sena Pasha, followed with gongs and drums. Upon reaching the hilltop, the elephant knelt, and King Kue Na and his entourage decided that the royal relics should be enshrined there.

• Wat Umong Mahathera Chan Temple - The Wat Umong complex spans 37.5 rai (15 acres) of lush, wooded land. “Talking trees” display words of wisdom in both Thai and English. The temple is renowned for its ancient tunnels and large chedi. Beneath the chedi, tunnels adorned with Buddhist images are open for exploration. These tunnels were reportedly built by the King and painted with forest scenes to confine a famous but mentally unstable monk within the monastery grounds, as he often wandered into the forest for days. Proverbs in English and Thai are displayed on signs hanging from the trees.
